Helicopters over Bangkok: Flight-Hour Rates, Routes and Booking Terms
Helicopter charter in Bangkok starts at ฿87,500 per flight hour before 7% VAT, for a twin-engine cabin with five passenger seats and the pilot included. A one-way flight to Pattaya costs ฿129,200 and to Hua Hin ฿132,300. Below: what is added to the hourly rate, how route fares compare, the aircraft itself and the terms for changing or cancelling a booking.
What a charter includes and how it is priced
A charter here means the whole aircraft for your group with a pilot at the controls, and the price comes in one of two units — time in the air or a fixed route.
The whole aircraft, with a pilot at the controls
The pilot is part of every charter and the cabin takes up to five passengers, so a private helicopter in Bangkok is never self-flown. The aircraft the market quotes is the Airbus EC135 P2+, a light twin-engine helicopter configured for two pilots and five guests in club seating, with an English-speaking pilot. Because one aircraft type covers the whole offer, this Rent-Trip section shows no model cards — instead there is a market price table with the rates per flight hour and per route. With the market built around one model rather than a range of sizes, as with yachts, the comparison comes down to the unit of the price and what is added to it. In my view, the first question for any quote is simple: is this airtime only, or airtime plus every leg the aircraft flies without you?
Two price units: the flight hour and the route
The flight hour is the base unit, and it is remarkably stable — the market quotes the same ฿87,500 per flight hour in more than one offer. The rate is quoted before 7% VAT, and not every quote says so, so ask. The second unit is the route: a fixed one-way fare from Bangkok to Pattaya at ฿129,200 for about 45 minutes in the air, and to Hua Hin at ฿132,300 for about 50 minutes. A route fare is easier to compare because it is priced close to the full out-and-back airtime. An hourly figure, by contrast, is a building block — the total grows with the minimum charge, VAT, ferry legs, waiting and airport fees. So if your trip matches one of the fixed routes, start with that fare and use the hourly rate only as a cross-check.
Door to door: transfers, lounge and boarding
A charter can be booked as a door-to-door trip — a car takes you from home or hotel to the helipad, and another meets you at the landing point. The transfers are arranged by limousine, and passengers wait in a pre-flight lounge rather than at a terminal gate. Security checks are short, and there is no airport queue, which matters most on short hops such as the 45-minute flight to Pattaya. Drinks such as champagne or whisky can be served on board. What the market does not spell out is whether the ground transfers are inside the route fare or billed separately. Before you compare two offers, check whether both include the car at each end — a quote without transfers can look cheaper only because half the journey is missing.
The flight-hour rate and the charges added to it
The hourly figure of ฿87,500 is a starting point, and five separate items can be added to it before you see a final amount.
What sits on top of ฿87,500
| Item | Rate | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Flight time | ฿87,500 per hour | 1 hour = ฿87,500 |
| VAT | 7% on top | 1 hour = ฿93,625 |
| Minimum charge | 30 minutes | ฿43,750 before VAT |
| Ferry legs | Flight-hour rate | Base to pick-up and back |
| Waiting | ฿2,625 per 30 min | 1 hour = ฿5,250 |
| Landing and permits | Billed separately | Depends on the landing site |
VAT, the 30-minute minimum and pro-rata time
Helicopter rental in Bangkok is billed by airtime with a floor: the minimum charge is 30 minutes, which is ฿43,750 before VAT. After the first half hour, time is counted pro rata rather than in whole hours, so 45 minutes come to ฿65,625 and 80 minutes to about ฿116,700. VAT of 7% is added to all of it — ฿6,125 on each full hour, which turns ฿87,500 into ฿93,625, and the minimum into about ฿46,800. That gap matters when you set two quotes side by side: one may show the net rate, the other the gross. A ฿6,125 difference per hour is not a discount, only a different presentation. Ask for every quote with VAT included, and the comparison becomes straightforward.
Ferry legs: the empty part of the flight
The ferry flight is the part people forget — the aircraft starts at its base, flies to pick you up, and after dropping you off it flies back to base. Those legs are included in the estimate at the same flight-hour rate as the time you spend on board. Hence a pick-up far from the base, or a one-way trip to a distant landing site, costs more than the time in the air with passengers. Landing fees and permit fees from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand are added on top, and they depend on where the aircraft lands. In practice, the cheapest trip is one that starts and ends close to where the aircraft is kept. When a quote looks high for a short trip, ask for the breakdown — mission time, ferry time, fees — before assuming the rate itself is out of line.
Waiting on the ground
Waiting time is charged at ฿2,625 for every 30 minutes, and any part of a half hour is rounded up to a full 30 minutes. That makes ฿5,250 an hour on the ground — about 6% of the cost of an hour in the air. A 40-minute wait counts as two blocks, so it costs ฿5,250, the same as a full hour; a 3-hour wait comes to ฿15,750. For a lunch in Pattaya or a meeting in Hua Hin, waiting is far cheaper than sending the aircraft back to base and calling it again, because each extra ferry leg is billed at the flight-hour rate. The rounding rule also means that a wait of 31 minutes costs the same as one of 60. Plan the return time in half-hour steps, and you pay only for the waiting you actually use.
Fixed-route flights to Pattaya and Hua Hin
Two routes from the capital have a fixed one-way fare, and comparing them with the flight-hour rate shows how much of the price is the empty return.
Route fares side by side
| Route | Landing point | Time in the air | One-way fare | Per seat, 5 aboard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok – Pattaya | Royal Cliff Beach | About 45 min | ฿129,200 | ฿25,840 |
| Bangkok – Hua Hin | Hua Hin Airport | About 50 min | ฿132,300 | ฿26,460 |
| Hourly charter | Your choice | Billed by time | ฿87,500 per hour | ฿17,500 per hour |
Why 45 minutes costs close to two flight hours
Bangkok to Pattaya by helicopter costs ฿129,200 one way, while 45 minutes at the hourly rate would be only ฿65,625 — the route fare is about 1.97 times higher. The reason is the return leg: the aircraft has to fly home empty. Ninety minutes in the air, out and back, comes to ฿131,250, just ฿2,050 above the Pattaya fare. Hua Hin follows the same logic with a slightly better deal: 100 minutes of round-trip time would be about ฿145,800, yet the fixed fare is ฿132,300, roughly ฿13,500 less. Between the two routes, the extra 5 minutes to Hua Hin cost only ฿3,100. So a route fare is not a surcharge — it is the out-and-back airtime priced as one package, and for these two destinations it is the simplest way to buy the trip.
Price per seat with a full cabin
With all five seats taken, the Pattaya fare works out at ฿25,840 per person and the Hua Hin fare at ฿26,460. On the hourly charter, a full cabin brings the cost to ฿17,500 per person for each hour aloft. These numbers only hold when every seat is used — with two passengers the Pattaya fare is ฿64,600 each, because the price is for the aircraft, not per head. The cabin limit is strict as well: five passengers is the maximum, so a group of six needs two aircraft or a split journey. Whether luggage reduces the usable seats is not stated, and on a light helicopter weight matters. For a group of four or five, mention the number of bags and their size in the first message, so the per-seat figure you plan with is the one you actually pay.
Coming back on the same day
The fixed fares are one-way, and the return is not listed as a separate price. Two options exist in principle: a second one-way fare, or keeping the aircraft on the ground while you are at your destination. The second option uses the waiting rate of ฿2,625 per 30 minutes — three hours in Pattaya would add ฿15,750, far less than a second fare of ฿129,200. Whether waiting at Royal Cliff Beach or Hua Hin Airport is available on the day depends on the landing site and on the operator's schedule, and landing fees may apply. Ask for both versions in one quote: return as a second route fare, and return after a wait. For a trip of a few hours, the difference can be larger than the cost of the outbound flight.
The twin-engine Airbus EC135 P2+
The model quoted for Bangkok charters is a light twin with five passenger seats, and its range sets the limit for single-leg destinations.
Specifications
| Parameter | Airbus EC135 P2+ |
|---|---|
| Engines | 2 × Pratt & Whitney |
| Crew and passengers | 2 pilots + 5 passengers |
| Cruise speed | 256 km/h (138 kt) |
| Range | About 500 km, or 2 h 15 min with 30 min reserve |
| Service ceiling | 3,045 m (10,000 ft) |
| Cabin | 5 club seats with beverage compartment |
Cabin, headsets and luggage
The EC135 P2+ cabin has five VIP club seats facing each other, a beverage compartment and Bose noise-cancelling headsets for every passenger. The headsets are not a luxury detail: rotor noise is constant, and with them the group can talk to each other and to the pilot during the flight. There is a large luggage compartment, but its volume and weight limit are not given, and on a helicopter of this size the load affects performance. For a trip with suitcases rather than day bags, send the number and size of the bags with the request, so the load is settled before the departure day rather than on the helipad.
Range and the longer destinations
The EC135 P2+ covers about 500 km in one leg, which equals 2 hours 15 minutes in the air with a 30-minute reserve kept in the tank. At ฿87,500 per hour, a full 2 hours 15 minutes in the air costs ฿196,875 before VAT — a useful ceiling for any single-leg trip. Destinations such as Phuket, Koh Samui or Chiang Mai appear in the list of places the helicopter can reach, but none of them has a fixed fare. For any trip near the edge of the range, ask whether the plan includes a fuel stop, how long it takes and whether that stop counts as waiting time. On longer routes the ferry legs grow as well, because the aircraft has to come back. A quote for a distant destination should therefore show three numbers — outbound time, return time and stops — before you compare it with a scheduled flight.
Sightseeing loops and destinations outside the city
Besides the fixed routes, the charter market covers sightseeing loops over the city and trips to landing sites across the country.
A loop over the city on the minimum
Helicopter tours over Bangkok are on offer too, and where the charter is billed by airtime, the shortest loop falls under the 30-minute minimum. That makes ฿43,750 before VAT, or about ฿46,800 with it, for the whole aircraft — roughly ฿9,360 per person with five aboard. A longer loop is counted pro rata after the first half hour, so 45 minutes comes to ฿65,625 before VAT. Agree the route of the loop when booking: the billed time covers everything from take-off to landing, not just the part over the sights. A loop that starts and ends at the base has no separate ferry legs, which keeps the price close to the pure airtime. If the helipad is far from the city centre, ask how many of the 30 minutes are spent getting to the view and how many over it.
Where else the aircraft can land
The market offers more than 50 destinations across Thailand, served from around 100 helipads. Besides Pattaya and Hua Hin, the list includes Kanchanaburi, Khao Yai national park, Phuket, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. Only the two seaside routes have a fixed fare; everything else is priced from the flight-hour rate, ferry legs and fees at the landing site. Landing fees and aviation permit fees are added to the quote, and they vary from one landing site to another. So for a destination outside the two fixed routes, helicopter rental in Bangkok becomes a calculation rather than a fixed fare. Give the exact landing point — a resort name or coordinates, not just a town — because the difference between a hotel helipad and the nearest airport can change both the fees and the transfer at the other end.
Choosing between hourly and route pricing
- Fixed route: for Pattaya or Hua Hin one way, the route fare is the clearest price and already includes the empty return.
- Short loop: a city tour that starts and ends at the base is cheapest on the hourly rate, from the 30-minute minimum.
- Day out with return: compare a second route fare with waiting time at ฿2,625 per 30 minutes — for a stay of a few hours, waiting costs less.
- Distant destination: ask for outbound, return and fuel-stop times separately, then add VAT and landing fees to the total.
Booking, rescheduling and cancellation
A helicopter flight is planned around the crew, the ferry legs and the permits, so the terms for changes are stricter than for a car or a boat.
What to send with a request
- Date and time: the departure time you need, and whether you are flexible by an hour either way.
- Route: pick-up point and exact landing site, plus whether you need the return the same day.
- Group: the number of passengers, up to five, so the seating is settled before the quote is made.
- Luggage: how many bags and their size, so the luggage compartment can be planned together with the seats.
- Ground transfers: whether you want the car to the helipad and from the landing point included in the price.
Moving the date or time
A reschedule is free if the request comes at least 24 hours before the scheduled mission time. Between 24 hours and 30 minutes before departure, moving the booking costs ฿17,500 — exactly one fifth of a flight hour. The rule is about the time of the request, not the new date, so a move requested two days ahead costs nothing even if the new departure is the following morning. The fee is fixed rather than a percentage, which makes it heavy on a 30-minute loop (it equals 40% of the ฿43,750 minimum) and light on a route fare (about 13.5% of the Pattaya price). What happens with a request less than 30 minutes before departure is not stated, and it is safer to treat that as a cancellation. If your plans depend on a meeting or a connecting flight, settle the time a full day ahead.
Cancellation scale in baht
| Notice before departure | Fee | Pattaya fare example |
|---|---|---|
| 72 hours or more | 25% | ฿32,300 |
| 3 to 72 hours | 50% | ฿64,600 |
| Less than 3 hours or no-show | 100% | ฿129,200 |
Key points before you book a flight
The figures below sum up how prices and terms work, so that any quote can be read in a minute.
Six figures to keep in mind
- Flight hour: ฿87,500 before 7% VAT, or ฿93,625 with it, for the whole aircraft with the pilot.
- Minimum: 30 minutes, which is ฿43,750 before VAT; after that, time is billed pro rata.
- Pattaya: ฿129,200 one way, about 45 minutes — close to 90 minutes of airtime, out and back.
- Hua Hin: ฿132,300 one way, about 50 minutes, landing at the airport.
- Waiting: ฿2,625 per started 30 minutes, much cheaper than a second ferry flight.
- Cancellation: 25% with 72 hours' notice, 50% from 3 to 72 hours, the full price after that.
Questions that turn an estimate into a total
- VAT: is the figure net or gross? On one flight hour the difference is ฿6,125.
- Ferry legs: are the flights from base to pick-up and back included in the quote?
- Fees: which landing and permit fees apply at your landing site, and are they in the total?
- Transfers: is the car to the helipad and from the landing point part of the price?
- Return: for a day trip, what does waiting cost against a second one-way fare?
- Range: for a distant destination, is a fuel stop planned, and how is it billed? Answers to these turn a helicopter charter in Bangkok from an hourly figure into a fixed total.
