Speed limits and the fines behind them

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): 120 km/h is the ceiling for passenger cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3 500 kg.
• Carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and similar): 90 km/h, though the road owner may raise it to 100 km/h on a signed stretch.
• Town streets: 30 km/h where there is one lane in each direction, 50 km/h with two or more lanes one way, and 20 km/h on a single-platform street where carriageway and pavement share one level.
• Speeding fines: the DGT table runs 100 EUR without points, then 300 EUR and 2 points, 400 EUR and 4 points, 500 EUR and 6 points, up to 600 EUR and 6 points. More than 60 km/h over the limit in town, or 80 km/h outside it, turns the case criminal.
• Alcohol: 0.25 mg/l of breath is the general limit, 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals; above 0.60 mg/l it is a crime. The penalty band is 500–1000 EUR and 4–6 points.
• Phone in hand: 200 EUR and 6 points. Seat belt, helmet or child seat: 200 EUR and 4 points, and the driver answers for a child without a seat.

Parking in Girona falls under zona blava and zona verda: €1.20 per hour, two hours maximum (€2.40), Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, with different hours around Sant Narcís. In Lloret de Mar the Can Lloranes car park holds 160 cars at roughly €15 per day between 23 June and 11 September and is free the rest of the year, while the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride holds 200 cars, is free for stays over 12 hours and throws in a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and it restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona, 7:00–20:00, Monday to Friday on working days. Cameras read number plates, so no sticker has to be shown, and there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car with the sticker faces no restriction — and if you plan a Girona morning, ask the manager at booking which badge the car carries before you fix the date.
