Why the hand-over is done this way

A delivered car removes the two things that most often go wrong on a short stay: finding the depot and getting out of it. Meeting the car at your address skips both steps. The caution, or dépôt de garantie, is blocked on the card for the length of the booking and released when the keys come back — that is the moment to walk round the car with the manager and note any new marks, because the état des lieux at return is what the agreement is settled against.

Paperwork decides whether the booking goes smoothly, and the rules here are stricter in one respect than most travellers expect: the licence itself must be old enough. What follows is what French law and the market actually require, plus the points we raise with clients before a booking is agreed.

Which driving licences are accepted

• EU/EEA licences: valid in France with no time limit and no exchange needed, as long as the licence is still in force.
• Non-EU/EEA licences, visitor: you may drive on your national licence; if it is not in Latin script, you need an official translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it.
• Non-EU/EEA licences, resident: driving is allowed for 1 year from the entry date shown in your visa; on moving to France permanently the licence must be exchanged.
• IDP status: the permit is a translation only, never a replacement — it is shown together with your national licence.
• IDP age limit: the international permit must be no older than 3 years.
• Holding period: the licence must have been issued more than 1 year ago, and digital licences are not accepted.

The gap we cannot close for you

Minimum age, the young-driver surcharge, and which card and passport you present are a measured gap: French rental pages do not state these conditions, and there is no single national rule — each company sets its own. We will not guess a figure for you. Instead, the terms of your Dacia booking are agreed when booking, together with everything else about the car. The same applies to a second driver: conducteur supplémentaire is a paid option added at booking, and we confirm the terms of it with you directly rather than publishing a number that would not match your case.

Carry the physical licence, the IDP if you hold one, your passport and the agreement in the car. The état des lieux — the walk-round of the car at hand-over and return — is part of the same paperwork chain, and the delivery point, the hand-over arrangements and the deposit are set out in the rental agreement. If your licence was issued less than a year ago, or you hold only a digital version, tell us at the booking stage: on this page there is no automatic alternative, and the condition is agreed with a manager rather than assumed.

Dacia car rental in Paris and driving in the ZFE

Both Dacias on this page are 5-seat gasoline manuals, and both carry the same practical burden inside the city: the ZFE de la Métropole du Grand Paris (Zone à Faibles Émissions) applies to them like any other car. The zone runs inside the A86 motorway, with the A86 itself excluded, and takes in the boulevard périphérique along with the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes. Crit'Air 5, 4, 3 and Non classé vehicles are barred, and the Crit'Air 3 cut-off has applied since 1 January 2025. A Crit'Air sticker on the windscreen is the document that matters here — without it, entering the ZFE is formally prohibited.

One lane is reserved for covoiturage — the left lane between the Issy embankment and porte de Bercy in both directions, Monday to Friday 7:00–10:30 and 16:00–20:00, for cars carrying two or more passengers. Enforcement began on 2 May 2025, and the penalty is €135, a contravention 4th class.

• Crit'Air sticker: the windscreen vignette that lets the car into the ZFE; without it, entry is formally prohibited.
• ZFE perimeter: inside the A86, the A86 excluded, including the boulevard périphérique and the two woods.
• Covoiturage lane: left lane, Issy embankment to porte de Bercy, weekday peaks, two or more people in the car.
• Péage en flux libre: barrier-free tolling on the A13 and A14 — you pay within 72 hours of the pass.
• Forfait post-stationnement: €75 or €50 for light vehicles in Paris, charged for unpaid parking, and not a road-traffic fine.

Outside the ring road the rules loosen. Drivers with permis probatoire — less than three years since the licence was issued — are held to 110 on motorways, 100 on divided roads and 80 elsewhere. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 31 March in roughly 34 mountain departments, more than 4000 communes; the capital and Île-de-France are not among them, so the requirement only bites if the trip heads for the Alps.

Parking is where the Sandero earns its place. The visiteur tariff has applied since 1 August 2021 and is split into 15-minute blocks. In our experience the smaller car is simply easier to leave somewhere legal in the centre, and the Duster's all-wheel drive buys nothing on the périphérique.

What changes once you leave the city

Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 31 March in around 34 mountain departments — the Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura, Vosges and Corsica — with either four winter tyres or chains on two driven wheels. Île-de-France is not covered, so it only matters if your route heads for the Alps. Fuel on this page is gasoline, so plan refuelling on the autoroute rather than assuming diesel is available at every stop.

Driving a manual on a long run

Both Dacias are manual, and French rental fleets are used to it — an automatic is a separate, dearer category. On the autoroute the fifth gear does the work, but the Sandero's 90 hp means longer climbs in the Massif Central need a lower gear. Our practice is simple: tell the manager at booking where you intend to go, and the rental agreement will carry the terms that apply to that route.

Insurance, excess and the rental agreement

Under French law, every hire includes responsabilité civile — third-party cover for injury and property damage, mandatory by law and part of any agreement. Dacia car rental in Paris then layers the market-standard protections on top: CDW, which limits your liability to the excess figure, and TW, which covers theft, attempted theft and vandalism on a car park, also within that same excess. What the base package does not cover at all is tyres under abnormal use, glass (unless it is collision damage), the sunroof and panoramic roof, the underside, a wrong-fuel fill and the engine damage that follows, lost or stolen keys, and damage caused by negligence or intent.

• Franchise: the fixed sum you pay yourself after damage or theft — non-waivable, set by the protection level you choose, and stated only in the rental agreement.
• Rachat de franchise: a paid option — Medium reduces the excess, Premium removes it or brings it down substantially.
• Caution / dépôt de garantie: a deposit blocked on a card for the length of the hire and released when the keys come back.
• Politique de carburant (plein-plein): you take the car full and return it full.
• Kilométrage illimité: unlimited mileage, as opposed to a franchise kilométrique, a capped allowance.
• État des lieux: the walk-round of the car at hand-over and at return.
• Conducteur supplémentaire: an extra driver, a paid option added at booking.
• Location aller simple: returning the car in a different city, one way.

The exact excess sum is not published as a single figure for France and varies by protection level and vehicle size — for a citadine, an SUV and anything larger it stands in the contract of the specific booking. Some Visa Premier and Gold Mastercard cards cover the CDW and TW excess when the hire is paid with that card and the holder is the main driver on the agreement; that is industry practice, not a bank's official document, so check your own terms before relying on it.

Two things are worth settling at booking rather than at hand-over. First, the deposit, the excess level and the fuel policy — we set these out in the rental agreement, and the manager confirms them with you. Second, whether you need the rachat de franchise at all: on a two-day city booking the CDW excess is rarely worth insuring away, while on a week of country roads the glass and tyre exclusions are the ones that actually bite, since neither is in the base package.
