Manual transmission dominates the cheaper classes, so if you want an automatic, the €26 Lancia Ypsilon is the entry point. For the Rondes, which run at 80 km/h, that automatic is worth the small step up from the €19 Fiat Panda — stop-and-go traffic on the B-10 and B-20 is where a manual wears you down.

Families should look at the 7-seat group rather than a large 5-seat SUV: the Dacia Jogger costs €56 a day against €64 for the Hyundai Santa Fe, and €72 for the Renault Espace. All three seat seven, but only the Santa Fe adds all-wheel drive.

The €1,232 ceiling belongs to a single Exotic car, so the range reflects the fleet, not a surcharge. In our practice, travellers who price a week first and then trim the days usually end up on the Crossover class: an MG ZS at €39 a day becomes €234 for the week, and the extra ground clearance and 5 seats are worth more on the Costa Brava roads than the €20 saved on an Economy hatchback.

What the rental agreement sets out

• Deposit: the amount is blocked on the card and is set out in the rental agreement — we do not quote a figure before you book.
• Insurance excess: the franquicia, the sum you carry yourself if the car is damaged, is printed in the agreement whatever level of protection you choose.

The compulsory Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is included in any booking by Spanish law, and covers injury and property damage to third parties up to the statutory limits — it does not cover the car itself or the driver, which is what CDW and THP options address. Ask the manager which protection level fits your route: on a hybrid used mainly inside the city, where speeds stay low, the base cover plus a careful walk-round at hand-over is often enough, while a car heading for the Pyrenees is worth checking the options that are set out in the rental agreement.

Driving a rental hybrid in the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona

The Zona de Bajas Emisiones Rondas de Barcelona (ZBE Rondes BCN) covers more than 95 km² — the whole municipality of Barcelona except the Zona Franca industrial area and the Vallvidrera – el Tibidabo i les Planes neighbourhood, plus L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat. It operates on working days, Monday to Friday. A hybrid carries the ECO distintivo ambiental, and that sticker is what lets a hired car cross the ring roads without a fine.

What the ECO sticker allows inside the ZBE Rondes BCN

• ECO (blue and green): the distintivo ambiental carried by every hybrid in the fleet, valid for entry into the ZBE on working days.

Paid parking is split into AREA Blava A at €2.5 per hour and AREA Blava B at €2.25 per hour, with resident zones free at weekends. Fuel is gasolina 95 E5 at a municipal average of €1.953 per litre, and the toll tunnel out of the city towards Sant Cugat and the Vallès, the Túnels de Vallvidrera on the C-16, costs €4.7 for a car.

In our experience the sticker question comes up at booking, not at the wheel — so we confirm the ECO status of the exact model with you before the dates are fixed, and the delivery point and time are agreed with the manager at the same moment. If a plug-in hybrid is what you want for the blue sticker, say so when you book: charging on the municipal Endolla Barcelona network is paid per kWh, with no subscription, which suits a short hire.

The same goes for a single airport-to-hotel transfer with the car parked for four days: a hybrid left standing recovers nothing, and the battery only earns its keep when the car is actually moving.

Where a hybrid genuinely earns its place is mixed driving. Our own bookings show the pattern clearly: travellers who take a car for a week and split it between the city, the Costa Brava and a run up to Montserrat come back with a fuel bill well below what the same route costs in a conventional petrol model of equal size. On a pure motorway slog to Tarragona and back, the gap narrows to almost nothing.

There is also the paperwork side. A hybrid carries the ECO sticker, which is what the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona reads at the camera — you are not applying for anything, registering anything or paying a daily charge to enter. A hybrid makes those runs cheaply. On a HEV the petrol engine does the long motorway stretch and the battery covers the slow crawl through a coastal town, so consumption drops exactly where a pure petrol car suffers most. The C-16 toward Sant Cugat and the Vallès costs €4.7 for a passenger car at the Túnels de Vallvidrera, and that is the road you take for Montserrat and the Pyrenees beyond it.

• Sitges: 35 km on the C-32, a coastal run that suits any Economy hybrid in the fleet.
• Montserrat: around 60 km inland via the C-16 and the Túnels de Vallvidrera, toll €4.7.
• Girona and the Costa Brava: roughly 100 km north on the AP-7, a comfortable half-day in a Crossover.
• Tarragona and PortAventura: about 100 km south, the same motorway, easy on a full hybrid.
• Penedès wine country: the shortest escape, and the one where a small hatchback is all you need.
• Andorra and the Pyrenees: the long trip, where a bigger hybrid and its higher seats help.

Andorra and the Pyrenees raise a question worth asking before you leave. Spain's rules on winter tyres are not a blanket seasonal requirement — DGT applies restrictions point by point, with signs and variable message boards, when snow affects driving, and those points are the mountain roads inland from the city rather than the city itself. Chains or winter tyres become relevant on the C-16 toward the Pyrenees and the Túnel del Cadí, so check conditions before you commit to a high-altitude route.
