In practice the daily figure is rarely the whole story. A ฿1,800 Innova over a month costs ฿37,800 on the monthly multiplier, while the same money spent on the ฿950 Vios (฿19,950 a month) covers almost two months. If you are staying longer than a week, say so at this point: weekly rates start from ฿5,700 and monthly rates from ฿19,950, and the multiplier is fixed — weekly is the daily rate times six, monthly is the daily rate times twenty-one. The car arrives clean with a full tank, and rental is available from one day.

What to have ready when the car arrives

• Home driving licence: valid for the whole hire.
• International Driving Permit: required alongside the home licence for non-ASEAN visitors.
• A bank card in the main driver's name: used for the security hold, with the amount set out in the rental agreement.
• Minimum age: 21, with conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes set out in the agreement.

The rental agreement itself is written in Thai and controlled by the OCPB, and since 30 December 2025 every fee and penalty in it has to be disclosed to you.

Driving a rented Toyota in Koh Samui with documents and island roads

Left-hand traffic and right-hand drive are the first two things to absorb, and they arrive together: you sit on the right of the car and pull out into the left lane. Foreign visitors need a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention; the police fine for driving without one runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim afterwards. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence instead.

• Home licence: your national permit, valid and not expired, carried alongside the IDP.
• International Driving Permit: issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, matched to your home licence.
• Passport: identity document for the rental agreement.
• Bank card in the main driver's name: used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
• Minimum age: 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement.
• Tax sticker: a square blue hologram on the windscreen, its year in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian plus 543) — a rental car must carry a current one.

The island's road layout explains most of what feels unfamiliar. The ring road around Koh Samui runs 51 km and connects the lowland and the coast, with Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam all sitting on it. Expect potholes, sometimes deep, standing water after rain, oil patches from refuse trucks, and animals wandering onto the tarmac.

Speed limits are set by law, not by the road's mood: 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90–120 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on motorways. Alcohol limits are 50 mg% in blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; refusal to take the test counts as an admission. Children under six must ride in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone under 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat — the fine reaches ฿2,000, and every passenger, including the rear row, wears a belt. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is not allowed.

Rain changes the driving more than anything else here. The wettest stretch runs from mid-October to early December, when the year's heaviest rainfall arrives and low sections of road flood; November alone averages 444.6 mm across 16.5 rainy days, against 64.3 mm and 4.3 days in February. The dry season falls between February and April, while July and August stay dry enough to be a genuine demand season rather than a washout.

Insurance, deposit and the rental agreement for your Toyota

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) covers injury to third parties and travels with the vehicle, not with the driver. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself.

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand has been a contract controlled by the OCPB. It is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed in it. That matters when you collect a Toyota on Koh Samui: the document you sign is the one that governs the deposit, the excess and any charge later, so read it before the keys change hands rather than after.

Documents for the main driver are a passport, a home driving licence, an International Driving Permit and a bank card in that driver's name. When to book Toyota car rental in Koh Samui for seasons and demand

February–April is the dry window; July–August is the summer demand peak, which on Koh Samui is not a rainy season at all.

Rain, and what it means for a booking

October to December is the wettest stretch of the year, and November is the peak: 444.6 mm of rain across 16.5 days, against 64.3 mm and 4.3 rainy days in February. October brings 294.9 mm over 15.8 days and December 263.1 mm over 11.6 days. Over a full year the island averages 1,994.3 mm across 120.6 rainy days. Reserve earlier in the wet months if you want a specific body style rather than whichever car is left.

High season runs from 20 December to 31 March, and the low season from 1 April to 19 December.

How to time the booking

The weekly rate is the daily rate times six and the monthly rate is the daily rate times 21, so a longer stay lowers the cost per day on any model. We agree the delivery address, the date and the time with a manager before the booking is fixed, which is also the moment to lock a class rather than a single car.
