A week starts at ฿4,800 and a month at ฿16,800, because weekly is daily × 6 and monthly is daily × 21. Both figures are the Economy entry point, so a Comfort car at ฿1,050 a day works out at ฿6,300 for the week and ฿22,050 for the month; a Premium Mercedes-Benz C 220 d reaches ฿25,680 weekly and ฿89,880 monthly. The multiplier is the same for every car in the fleet, which means the absolute saving grows with the class — a month in Premium is a far bigger number than a month in Economy, even though both are charged at 21 daily rates.

Sedan rental runs on a short, fixed document set: passport, home driving licence, International Driving Permit where it applies, and a bank card in the main driver's name. The minimum age is 21, and anything beyond that baseline is agreed when booking.

Two Thai rules shape the contract itself. Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car, so it travels with the vehicle. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement.

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner — us — and re-invoiced to the renter, so a camera flash on the motorway reaches you later rather than at the roadside.

Speed limits and cameras you will meet

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h inside Pattaya City, which the law names a built-up area, and 90 km/h outside it.
• Motorway 7: 120 km/h on the Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya route; signs can lower the limit locally.
• Camera enforcement: the 120 km/h limit on Motorway 7 is enforced primarily by speed cameras.
• Fines: up to ฿1,000, with ฿500 the usual figure on the receipt.
• Who gets the ticket: a camera fine is issued to the car owner — the rental company — and re-invoiced to the renter.

Alcohol, seat belts and child seats

The alcohol limit is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, drivers on temporary licences, drivers without a licence or on the wrong category, and drivers whose licence is suspended or withdrawn. For other drivers, treat any drink as a reason to hand the keys to someone else. Every passenger wears a seat belt, including the back row. Children under six must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and anyone shorter than 135 cm needs a seat belt or a special seat; the fine reaches ฿2,000. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited.

• Khao Kheow Open Zoo: 46.9 km out, about 44 minutes each way.
• Bang Saen and Si Racha: 47.6 km and 28.3 km north on Hwy 3 Sukhumvit, the free coastal alternative to the tolled Motorway 7.
• Silverlake and Ramayana: 26.2 km and 27.8 km south-east, both reachable inside half an hour on a quiet morning.

Islands, piers and the one place a sedan cannot go

Koh Larn is 7.5 km offshore and the ferry from Bali Hai Pier carries passengers only, so the car stays parked for the crossing — plan the island day as a car-free one and leave the vehicle at your hotel. Ban Phe Pier, the mainland gateway to Koh Samet, is 79.6 km away, about 62 minutes by road, and the car can wait there while you take the boat. Koh Chang is a different proposition: its car ferries take vehicles, and whether a rental car may cross is agreed when booking.

Fuel, tolls and what a long day costs

Fuel on this page is priced per litre from Bangchak retail: gasohol 95 at ฿39.94, gasohol 91 at ฿39.57, E20 at ฿34.94, E85 at ฿30.88, diesel B7 at ฿41.44, diesel B20 at ฿36.44, premium 98 at ฿49.29 and premium diesel at ฿50.05. Motorway 7 charges cars by the section — ฿25 at Lat Krabang up to ฿105 at Pong, and the whole Bangkok–Pattaya run comes to ฿105–฿130; cash is taken in the left lanes and M-PASS or Easy Pass in the blue ones, and for a hired car cash is the simpler choice. Speed cameras on M7 enforce the 120 km/h limit, and a camera fine is issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter — so keep to the posted figure, which signs can lower.

Three airports feed this stretch of the coast, and they are not interchangeable for planning. U-Tapao sits 48.9 km away by road, roughly 62 minutes without traffic, and carries the official name U-Tapao–Rayong–Pattaya International Airport. Suvarnabhumi is 115.8 km out — about 100 minutes — with Motorway 7 running past it, so a sedan collected there is on the motorway almost immediately. Don Mueang is the longest run at 151.3 km and around 121 minutes, the one low-cost arrivals tend to use.

Weekly starts at ฿4,800 and monthly at ฿16,800, which spreads the daily cost of a sedan across far more days of use than a short break allows. Rear-wheel drive only appears in the Premium Mercedes-Benz cars, so if you simply want space and an automatic gearbox, the Economy and Comfort bands cover it.
