Every car in our minivan fleet is a 7-seat MPV with a petrol engine and an automatic transmission. The class covers seven models: Toyota Avanza, Toyota Sienta, Honda Mobilio, Honda BR-V, Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Innova and Toyota Veloz. Six of them run a 1.5 L engine with output between 104 hp and 121 hp; the Toyota Innova is the exception at 2.0 L and 172 hp. All seven are automatic, all take petrol, and every one is a right-hand-drive car, because traffic here keeps to the left. If you are weighing up models, remember that luggage volume, not seat count, is what usually decides — check the boot with the third row up before you commit.
Self-drive, not a transfer
You drive the minivan yourself; we hand over the car clean and with a full tank. That is the whole point of the format: no driver waiting on your schedule, no per-trip fare, no negotiating a return time at the end of an evening. Self-drive means the car waits at your address for the whole period, so day trips to Na Muang waterfall or Lamai viewpoint do not depend on a driver's schedule.

The Toyota Avanza is the only rear-wheel-drive minivan we list, and it is also the cheapest at ฿1,200 per day. The Honda BR-V and the Mitsubishi Xpander sit in the middle of the range, at ฿1,500 and ฿1,700.

Every minivan on this page is petrol, automatic and 7-seat, so the choice comes down to power, boot space and budget rather than transmission or fuel. Rates start at ฿1,200 per day and top out at ฿1,800, and the same car is delivered to any address on Koh Samui or to Samui International Airport (USM), with the address, date and time agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. How weekly and monthly rates are calculated
A week of minivan hire starts at ฿7,200 and a month starts at ฿25,200, because weekly is the daily rate × 6 and monthly is the daily rate × 21. Take the Toyota Avanza at ฿1,200 per day: a week comes to ฿7,200 and a month to ฿25,200. The same multipliers apply across the whole fleet, so the Toyota Innova at ฿1,800 per day runs to ฿10,800 weekly and ฿37,800 monthly, and the Honda BR-V at ฿1,500 per day runs to ฿9,000 and ฿31,500.
What is included in the price

Driving a rented minivan around Koh Samui

What the island roads are actually like
The ring road runs 51 km around the island and connects the lowlands with the coast; every resort — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam — sits on it. Expect potholes in the surface, sometimes deep ones, flooding after heavy rain, oil patches left by refuse trucks and animals on the road.
Where a minivan earns its money
- Round the island: the full 51 km loop passes Maenam, Bophut, Chaweng, Lamai, Nathon and Lipa Noi, with short turn-offs to Big Buddha, Choeng Mon and Taling Ngam.
- Koh Phangan day trip: Raja Ferry Port sails from Lipa Noi to Thong Sala in about 1 h 30 min.
- Airport runs: Samui International Airport (USM) sits in Bo Phut, roughly 2 km north of Chaweng, so a drop-off there costs you minutes, not an hour.
Parking, fuel and fines
Fuel on the island comes as E20, 91 and 95, and every model in the fleet — Toyota Avanza, Toyota Sienta, Honda Mobilio, Honda BR-V, Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Innova and Toyota Veloz — runs on petrol with an automatic transmission, so a fill-up is the same routine whichever one you take. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited, and any penalty for it is set out in the rental agreement. Children under 6 must ride in a child seat to the TISI standard, and below 135 cm they need a restraint or a special seat. All passengers, including the rear row, wear seat belts. Drink-driving is measured at 50 mg% in blood, or 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences, and it carries up to 1 year of imprisonment, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000 or both, plus a licence suspension of at least 6 months; refusing the test counts as an admission. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so keep the car's documents in order — the rental agreement sets out what applies.
Before you set off
- Home licence plus IDP: a foreign visitor needs a home driving licence and an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act; ASEAN citizens drive on their national licence.
- Fine for driving without one: ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
- Insurance: compulsory Por Ror Bor covers injury to third parties on every registered car; Class 1 cover for damage to the car, its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement.
- Under 25: conditions for younger drivers and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement.
- Ferry with the car: most Samui rentals do not allow the car off the island — ask us before booking if you plan a crossing, and we will confirm what is possible.

Driving rules that catch visitors out
Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive. Children under 6 must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and below 135 cm a seat belt or a special seat is required — the fine runs up to ฿2,000. All passengers, including the back row, wear seat belts. Parking is not allowed at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb.

Booking early matters most for the weeks between 20 December and 31 March, when demand on the island peaks.
The two seasons that shape demand
The high season runs from 20 December to 31 March, and the low season from 1 April to 19 December. Rainfall follows its own pattern: February to April is the driest stretch, with 64.3 mm in February and 82.9 mm in April, while October to December is the wettest, peaking at 444.6 mm in November.
Rain, roads and what it changes for a driver
- October to December: the heaviest rain of the year, with 294.9 mm in October and 444.6 mm in November, so expect flooded stretches and slippery asphalt on the 51 km ring road.
- February to April: the driest months, 4.3 rain days in February and 4.7 in March, which suits long days around the island and trips to Na Muang waterfall or Lamai viewpoint.

- Raja Ferry holiday period 30 December – 30 April: extra sailings are added when car queues build at Don Sak and Lipa Noi.
