What you need to carry
Home driving licence: the original card from your country of residence, valid for the whole rental period. ASEAN nationals: a national licence from an ASEAN country is enough, and no permit is required. Rental agreement: the contract itself, which since 30 December 2025 is controlled by the OCPB and written in Thai with every fee and penalty disclosed inside it. Tax sticker: the square blue hologram on the windscreen must be current — the year on it follows the Buddhist calendar.
The fine for driving without a permit
A foreign visitor driving on a home licence alone risks a police fine of ฿500–1,000 under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident.
Alcohol, speed and child seats
The blood-alcohol limit is 50 mg%, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; refusing the test counts as an admission, and the penalty runs to a year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000 or both, with a licence suspension of at least six months. Passenger cars under 2,200 kg are capped at 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90–120 km/h outside them, and there are no motorways or divided four-lane roads on the island. Children under six must travel in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a seat or a belt; the fine reaches ฿2,000. Every passenger in every row wears a belt, and the security hold is set out in the rental agreement.
