What documents you need for a premium booking

• Driving licence: a valid foreign licence is accepted in Georgia for up to one year from your date of entry, with no exchange required.
• Non-Latin or non-Cyrillic licences: if your licence carries neither script, bring an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation — Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention.

Age, experience and the deposit

The minimum age and the required driving experience are agreed when you book — we do not state them here, because they are a rental condition rather than a rule of Georgian law. The same applies to the deposit: its amount, the insurance excess, any delivery fee and any discount are set out in the rental agreement, and the manager confirms those four lines with you before the booking is fixed. On the insurance side, compulsory third-party cover for Georgian-registered cars is not yet in force for owners: the government placed its introduction in the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named. What we can arrange is CDW or Super CDW as an option on our premium cars, and theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard insurance — leave nothing visible in a Maybach parked overnight on a street.

What Georgian law fixes, and what it does not

Speed limits, seat belts, phone use and child seats are statutory, and the figures are worth knowing before you take a 530 hp sedan onto the Georgian Military Highway. In built-up areas the limit is 60 km/h and 20 km/h in residential zones; outside built-up areas it is 90 km/h for category B, 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h with a light trailer. Front seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory by law. Phones work only through a hands-free kit, with both hands on the wheel. Children under three travel in the back in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, and a child under six must never be left alone in a parked car. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, with chains on at least the two front wheels in government-designated zones under particular weather conditions.

• Outside built-up areas, category B: 90 km/h, rising to 110 km/h on motorways and falling to 80 km/h with a light trailer.
• Seat belts: required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory under Article 21, paragraph 9.
• Phones: hands-free or speaker only, with both hands on the wheel.
• Children under 3: carried in the rear in a seat or restraint matched to height and weight; a passenger aged 16 or over may hold the child on their lap in the rear.

Winter tyres, mountain passes and the roads out of the city

Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-defined zones under particular weather conditions chains are required on at least the two front wheels. The Georgian Military Highway, the S3, runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, topping out at the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m; the upper sections see landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is high. Gudauri itself sits at 2,200 m by the pass, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital, with the ski season running from early December to mid-April. Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, so no vignette or transponder is needed — the Road Department confirmed this on 10.06.2026 and says no change is planned.

Crossing into Armenia and the Azerbaijani border

The main crossing into Armenia is Sadakhlo–Bagratashen, about 80 km south of the capital, with a second at Ninotsminda–Bavra; the run to Yerevan is roughly 280 km and takes 4–5 hours including the border. Azerbaijan's land border has been closed to passengers since 2020 and all overland points remain sealed — only the Tbilisi–Baku passenger train resumed on 26 May, so a car cannot cross there. A rental car goes to Armenia only with our driver; a self-drive car stays in Georgia.

At the last recorded prices, petrol in Georgia sat at 4.06 ₾ per litre against 4.76 ₾ for diesel, so diesel runs about 17 % dearer — irrelevant here, since a BMW 320, a CLS 550 and the three S-Class and Maybach cars all run on petrol.

Parking in the city

• Street parking: zonal, from 1 ₾ per hour after the first 15 free minutes, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or at kerbside terminals.
• Underground car parks: Freedom Square around 2–3 ₾ per hour, Rike around 7 ₾ per day, Orbeliani Square around 1–2 ₾ per hour, Galleria Tbilisi about 2 ₾ for the first hour.
• Enforcement: an unpaid session is fined 50 ₾; towing costs 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ a day.
• Long-stay permits: annual 50 ₾, six months 25 ₾, a week 4 ₾ — a resident's tool, not something a visitor needs.

Tolls and mountain roads

Georgia charges nothing to use its roads. The Roads Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that "use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge", with no change planned, and there are no vignettes or transponders to buy. That includes the Rikoti Pass on the east–west E60 — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025 at a cost of around 2.6 billion ₾. Winter is the one thing that changes a route rather than a bill: from 1 December to 1 March winter tyres are compulsory, and in government-defined zones chains are required on at least two front wheels in bad conditions. The Jvari Pass closes when avalanche risk is high, so check the road before committing to Kazbegi or Gudauri rather than assuming the route is open.
