Best Renault for coastal drives and small resort towns

The Renault Clio at €26 a day is the easiest fit for tight resort streets and zona blava bays limited to 2 hours. If your plan is Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Tossa de Mar in one week with a different bay each day, book the small class and put the money into the extra days.

Renault for longer routes and inland day trips

The Renault Kadjar at €50 is the manual alternative with 1.3 L and 140 hp.

Electric and automatic Renault options

• Renault 5 E-Tech: the only electric model here, 52 kWh, 150 hp, automatic, 5 seats, €48 a day — best when you charge overnight at your accommodation.
• Renault Arkana: hybrid with an automatic gearbox, 1.6 L, 145 hp, 5 seats, €50 a day, no charging cable needed.
• Renault Kangoo Van: diesel, manual, 2 seats, €65 a day — the only two-seater, chosen for volume rather than passengers.

Automatic also comes on the Arkana and Austral, so an automatic does not force you into the electric class. The 5 E-Tech suits a stay with a fixed base and a charger, while the hybrids suit a week that moves between towns.

The walk-round at hand-over

Every scratch and dent already on the car has to be written into the rental agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away, and both sides sign it — you keep a copy. That is consumer law in Spain, not a favour from the company, and it is the single step that decides who pays if damage is found later. Check the fuel gauge reads full and that the tank level matches the agreement.

Returning the Renault

Fuel: what a tank costs and where to fill up

Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona, with a median of 1.979, a low of 1.718 and a high of 2.122 across 250 stations; the coastal strip runs slightly higher at 1.956 average across 58 stations. Diesel (Gasóleo A) sits at 1.922 average province-wide across 266 stations and 1.932 along the coast across 59. Premium 98 E5 costs 2.106 on average across 152 stations province-wide. We hand the car over with a full tank and expect it back the same way — full-to-full, lleno-lleno in Spanish. Miss that and the missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Coastal stations average slightly more than the province as a whole — 1.956 against 1.94 for petrol 95.

Tolls on the routes you will actually drive

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor down to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so your airport run costs nothing.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the route towards Blanes and Lloret, free since the barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: also free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): the only Generalitat tolls left — barrier Vallcarca 8.42 €, Cubelles 5.03 €, category 2. Neither sits on a Costa Brava route.

The ZBE and the DGT sticker

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has applied since 15.09.2025, running 7–20 on weekdays, and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. Cars without a DGT environmental badge and not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; 24 days a year are allowed inside the restricted hours without a permit. Cameras read plates, so there is no sticker to display. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, which means no restriction applies to the car we deliver — worth confirming with the manager when your booking is agreed if you plan to drive into Girona itself.

Documents, licence and insurance for your Renault rental

Spain's rules on paperwork are the same whether you collect a Renault Clio in Lloret de Mar or a Kadjar further up the coast, so the checklist below is short and settled.

Licence and identity documents

• EU/EEA licence: fully valid in Spain until its expiry date, with nothing extra required and no international permit needed.
• Non-EU licence: valid for driving here, but the DGT advises getting an International Driving Permit before you travel and carrying it with your passport and your national licence.
• Licence not in Spanish: accepted only with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if it was issued on the Appendix 9 Geneva or Appendix 6 Vienna model — an IDP covers this in practice.
• International Driving Permit: a supporting document only, shown together with your passport and national licence, valid for one year.
• Passport or ID: the original in the main driver's name; companies ask for it, though the DGT sets no single rule.

Insurance that comes with the car

Every car legally on a Spanish road carries compulsory third-party cover, and it is part of your booking by default. The statutory limits are 70 million EUR per incident for personal injury, however many people are hurt, and 15 million EUR per incident for property damage. That cover protects other people, not you and not the car.

Two things are worth doing before you drive off. First, walk round the car and make sure every scratch and dent is written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you leave — both sides sign it and you keep a copy, otherwise the damage is charged to you. Second, check the fuel level: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the agreement. If the model you booked is not available, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even one class higher; if you are given a lower class, the price should come down.
