When snow affects traffic, DGT restricts vehicles without winter tyres or chains, and applies it point by point by sign and overhead panel — not as a blanket rule for the whole region. Winter tyres are not a permanent legal requirement in Spain. Chains in the boot are the cheap insurance for a mountain day, and a rear-wheel-drive Smart on a snow-covered slope is not the car to test the theory in.
