Spanish rental law splits the paperwork in two: what the DGT requires you to hold, and what a rental company asks for at the counter. For a Maserati, the second list is the one that decides whether the booking goes ahead.

Driving licences that are valid in Spain

A licence from the EU or the EEA — Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway included — is valid in Spain for as long as it stays in date, and nothing else is needed. An International Driving Permit is not required for those holders. A licence from a third country is valid if it is in force, if you are old enough in Spain for the equivalent category, and if no more than six months have passed since you took up ordinary residence in Spain. The environmental sticker (distintivo ambiental) is what decides entry: 0 emisiones (blue) and ECO (blue-green) are the cleanest categories. A foreign-registered car needs prior registration in the Registre metropolità de vehicles estrangers i altres vehicles autoritzats a les zones de baixes emissions before it may enter. Our cars are registered locally, so the sticker question is settled for you — but if you drive your own foreign-plated car on the same trip, sort the registration out before you reach the Rondes.

Parking: AREA Blava, tariffs and hours

• Payment: pay at the parquímetre and keep the comprovant d'estacionament — the ticket number must match the car's plate.
• Hours: paid AREA hours apply on working days; resident zones in the city switch to different rules at weekends.
• Green zone: the àrea verda is priced above the blue zone and prioritises residents over visitors.

Under Spanish consumer rules the advertised price of a hire has to include every mandatory charge you cannot legally drive without, and any scratches or dents should be written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you leave, signed by both sides, with a copy for you. A mark that never made it onto the sheet is a mark you will be arguing about at return, and the argument is much cheaper to have at the kerb than three days later. • WWI (Glass and Tyres Protection): a separate option for windscreens, windows and tyres, which basic CDW normally does not include.

Spain splits liability by the type of offence. For parking and for not paying a toll, the owner or the renter of the car answers; for moving violations, alcohol and drugs, the person who was driving answers. If an offence is not handed over at the roadside, the authorities go to the owner or the renter — DGT names both vehículos de alquiler and de renting — until it is established who was at the wheel. Fines run by grade: leve up to 100 EUR with no points, grave at 200 EUR, muy grave at 500 EUR and always with points, with a 50% reduction if you pay within 20 calendar days.
