Longer bookings are charged at weekly and monthly rates that are lower per day than the daily rate: weekly = daily x 6, monthly = daily x 21. The same arithmetic applies up the range — a convertible week is daily x 6, a convertible month is daily x 21 — so the longer you keep the car, the less each day costs. Fuel and speed limits

The Ranger, Ranger Raptor and Everest all take diesel; the Mustang Convertible takes petrol. At Bangchak retail prices, diesel B7 sits at ฿41.44 a litre and gasohol 95 at ฿39.94. Fill up before a long run out of the city.

Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on Motorway 7, where signs can lower the posted figure. Motorway 7 runs from Bangkok through Chonburi towards Pattaya before continuing to Map Ta Phut, and its camera fines are issued to the car owner — that is, to us — then re-invoiced to the renter. The fine is up to ฿1,000, though the receipt on the spot is usually ฿500. On Beach Road and Second Road the pair runs one-way anticlockwise, so plan the loop before you pull out of the car park.

Alcohol and seating rules

Thailand's alcohol limit of 20 mg/dl applies to drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences, drivers without a licence or with a licence of the wrong category, under a ministerial regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024.

Children under six must ride in a child seat built to the TISI standard, and anyone below 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat — the rule covers cars, pickups and minivans, with a fine of up to ฿2,000. Every passenger wears a seatbelt, including the rear row.

Islands, piers and the one rule that catches people out

Koh Larn sits 7.5 km off the coast, and the ferry from Bali Hai Pier takes passengers only — a car stays parked ashore, so a Ford is the wrong vehicle to book for that crossing. Koh Samet is reached the same way, by passenger boat from Ban Phe, with the car left behind; the Koh Chang ferries do take cars, and taking a rental car across is agreed when booking. For anything you drive to yourself, the motorway network does the work: Motorway 7 runs from Bangkok through Chonburi to Pattaya and continues to Map Ta Phut, 8 lanes with a 120 km/h limit. If you would rather avoid the tolls, Highway 34 Bang Na–Trat and Highway 3 Sukhumvit through Bang Saen and Bang Phra get you there without paying.

Driving without an International Driving Permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — the permit is not paperwork you can leave at the hotel.
