Spain splits drivers into two groups: those holding EU/EEA licences and those holding licences from third countries. The paperwork depends on which group you fall into, and on whether your licence is readable to a Spanish officer.

EU and EEA licences versus third-country licences

A licence issued in the EU or EEA — Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway included — is fully valid in Spain for as long as it remains in force, and an international driving permit is not required alongside it. Third-country licences work differently: they are accepted if the licence is still valid, if the holder is old enough for the equivalent category in Spain, and if no more than six months have passed since the holder took up ordinary residence in Spain. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip, and for licences not written in Spanish it is the practical answer — a licence in Cyrillic, Arabic or characters is valid either with an official translation into Spanish or if it was issued on the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.

Every car in our sports fleet is covered by Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil — the compulsory third-party cover that Spanish law builds into any hire. It pays for damage you cause to other people and their property, not for the car itself and not for you. The limits are 70 million EUR per incident for personal injury, however many people are hurt, and 15 million EUR per incident for property damage. That cover is always active, even if the person driving was not named in the agreement.

What the compulsory cover does and does not pay for

• Seguro Obligatorio: third-party liability only — the other party's injuries, vehicle and property; the law sets the limits at 70 million EUR and 15 million EUR.
• Your own car: never covered by the compulsory policy — a kerb strike, a scrape on a barrier or a wheel against a bollard comes out of your pocket unless you take a waiver.
• The driver: the compulsory policy does not cover injuries to the person behind the wheel.

CDW, THW and the excess you carry

Collision Damage Waiver is the optional layer that removes your liability for damage to the car after a collision with another vehicle or an object — minus the excess. Theft Protection does the same job for full or partial theft and for vandalism, again minus the excess. SCDW and SPCDW buy back part or all of the collision excess, while STHW and SPTHW do it for the theft excess; neither works if you have not taken the underlying CDW or THW, or if an exclusion in that cover applies. Glass and tyres sit outside base CDW and need the separate WWI option. The excess itself — franquicia — is the fixed amount you pay towards any damage regardless of which waiver you hold, and it is printed in the rental agreement.

What is agreed when booking

The deposit, the excess figure and any delivery fees are set out in the rental agreement, and we confirm them with you before you commit. Spanish consumer rules give you a lever here: every scratch and dent has to be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away, both sides sign it, and you keep a copy — without that record, damage found later is laid at your door. If the model you booked is unavailable, you can ask for another car at no extra cost, even a class above; a downgrade has to come with a lower price.

In our experience the day-trip question comes down to seats, not speed. A couple taking the Aston Martin Vantage to Sitges for lunch has two seats and a boot barely big enough for a change of clothes; a group of five going the same distance needs the RS6. If the plan is a full day out at Montserrat with the cable car and the monastery, book the car for the whole day rather than a half-day slot — the drive alone is close to an hour each way, and the road up is slow. Longer bookings follow the same rule as any other: weekly is daily × 6 and monthly is daily × 21, so a three-day run to the Costa Brava is priced day by day.
