Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations; diesel (Gasóleo A) averages 1.922 EUR/l across 266 stations. On the coast the averages sit slightly higher — 1.956 EUR/l for petrol 95 and 1.932 EUR/l for diesel across 58 and 59 stations respectively. Our own rule is simple: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank, full-to-full, lleno-lleno. No other fuel option is offered, so if the tank comes back short the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. The full-to-full rule is the cheaper habit on a Costa Brava trip — you fill up once before the return leg rather than paying a refuelling fee at the end.

The AP-7 corridor and what it costs now

The AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera — the whole corridor down to the French border — has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so driving north from Figueres towards the border costs nothing at the barrier. The C-32 Maresme (Montgat–Palafolls), the route towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar, also went free: the barriers came down in the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021, and the C-33 to Montmeló followed the same date. What remains tolled under the Generalitat's current network are only the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern stretch of the C-32 towards Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € in category 2. None of those sit on a route up the coast.

• Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) to Lloret de Mar: 34.6 km, 37 minutes, mostly on the C-63 and A-2.
• GRO to Roses: 75.2 km, 63 minutes, with 41.8 km of that on the AP-7.
• GRO to Cadaqués: 89.4 km, 80 minutes, mixing the AP-7, GI-614 and C-260.
• Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) to Lloret de Mar: 89.6 km, 75 minutes without traffic, via the C-32, C-31 and B-10.
• Cadaqués to Cap de Creus: subject to seasonal access control on the lighthouse road — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September.

The ZBE and the DGT sticker

Girona's Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) has been in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It operates 7–20 on weekdays, and it restricts cars without a DGT environmental sticker that are not registered in Girona; there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit. Cameras read plates, so no sticker has to be displayed. Spanish fleets carry the DGT sticker, so a car hired from us faces no restriction there. If your route includes a drive into Girona, check the sticker rather than the clock — the cameras do not care why you are in the zone.

Fuel and parking on the way

Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 €/litre across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations; diesel averages 1.922 €/litre across 266 stations, and the coastal strip runs slightly higher at 1.956 € for petrol. Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at roughly 15 €/day from 23 June to 11 September and is free outside that window, while the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride offers 200 spaces free for stays over 12 hours with a free bus ticket into the centre from 15 June to 15 September.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement

• EU/EEA licence: valid in Spain as it stands until its expiry date; no international permit is needed.

Insurance that is already in the price

Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is included in every booking by Spanish law and applies always — even if the person at the wheel was not named in the agreement. It covers harm to third parties, with limits of 70 million EUR per incident for personal injury however many people are hurt, and 15 million EUR per incident for property damage. The excess itself is printed in the agreement whatever protection level you take, and the deposit is a pre-authorisation on the card, notified before you sign.

What the agreement fixes before you drive off

Spanish consumer rules are specific here: every scratch and dent must be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you leave, both sides sign it and you keep a copy — otherwise the damage comes back to you. If the model you booked is not there, you can ask for another car at no extra charge even in a higher class; if you are given a lower class, the price must come down; if the car does not match the agreed conditions — automatic gearbox, four doors — you can cancel the booking and get the prepayment back. Our own part is simpler: the car is handed over clean with a full tank and comes back full (lleno-lleno), and any missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee is charged as set out in the rental agreement. Minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge, which cards are taken and where you may drive the car are agreed when booking — we do not state them as fixed figures on this page.
