We bring the car to any address in Bangkok and to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the first ten minutes out of Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang are the ones worth taking slowly. The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, and a delivery fee, if any, is agreed when booking. You can take the car at the terminal and drive straight to Sukhumvit or Silom — the manager confirms the meeting point and the hour when you book. Daily rates from ฿1,300

A day of minivan hire starts at ฿1,300 and runs to ฿5,850, and the daily rate is the figure every longer booking is built from. The ฿1,300 entry point is the 1.5 L Toyota Veloz with 7 seats and petrol under the bonnet; the ฿5,850 ceiling is the 2.5 L Toyota Alphard or its Toyota Vellfire twin, both 7-seat petrol MPVs with 182 hp. Between them sit the diesel workhorses — the 2.8 L Toyota Commuter at ฿2,150, the 3.0 L Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Toyota Ventury at ฿2,400 each, the Hyundai H-1 at ฿3,200 and the 2.2 L Kia Carnival at ฿4,400. A monthly booking is not 30 separate daily rates — the multiplier is fixed at 21, so the saving per day grows the longer you keep the car. That is the single most useful thing to know when you are weighing a two-week trip against a full month: the arithmetic is on your side at the longer term, whichever minivan you choose.

Speed limits and seat belts

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h.
• Motorways (M7, M9): 120 km/h.
• Expressways: 110 km/h.
• Elevated sections: 100 km/h.
• Seat belts: every passenger, including the back row, must wear one.
• Child seats: children under 6 need a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat — the fine runs up to ฿2,000.

A minivan carrying a full group of twelve makes the belt rule easy to forget in the back rows; check them yourself before pulling away, because a camera or a checkpoint will not.

Documents the driver brings

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act). Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. Bring your passport, your home licence, the permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name. The minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter — on Motorway 7, speed cameras work the same way.

Insurance and the agreement itself

VAT 7% is included in the prices shown, so the daily rate you see is the daily rate you pay. Weekly and monthly rates are lower per day than the daily rate — weekly = daily x 6, monthly = daily x 21. One practical note: agree the delivery address and time in the same message as your flight or train details, because a van meeting a group of twelve at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal needs a different slot from one meeting two people at a hotel in Sukhumvit.

Driving a rented minivan around Bangkok and beyond

Expressways, tolls and how to pay them

• Payment: cash or an Easy Pass tag; M-PASS works too, the tags are interchangeable, but one car carries one tag.
• Motorway 7: 149.3 km toward Chonburi and Pattaya; from the Lat Krabang entrance a car pays ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya.
• Motorway 9: the outer ring, Kanchanaphisek, runs barrier-free on M-Flow — a camera reads the plate and the bill follows later.
• Don Muang Tollway: 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, from Din Daeng up to Don Mueang.
• M-Flow deadlines: pay within 2 days of the crossing by plate number; from day three the tariff doubles, then adds a 10× penalty.

On M-Flow, ask at hand-over how the bill is settled on a hire vehicle. Ask at hand-over whether a tag is attached to your vehicle and how crossings are settled — that is a question for the agreement, not for the road.

Speed limits and what the cameras watch

In built-up areas the limit is 80 km/h, outside them 90 km/h, on the motorways 120 km/h, on the expressways 110 km/h and on elevated sections 100 km/h. Speed cameras on Motorway 7 enforce the 120 km/h limit, and the fine is issued to the owner of the car, then re-invoiced to the driver. Children under 6 must ride in a child seat to the TISI standard, and everyone in every row wears a seat belt — the fine for a missing seat reaches ฿2,000. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited; one operator quotes ฿500, though that is their figure rather than the text of the law.

Out of town and the airport runs

Suvarnabhumi sits about 25 km from downtown, 27.9 km in a straight line from Democracy Monument and 40.6 km by road, roughly 52 minutes without traffic; Don Mueang is 20.5 km straight and 27.4 km by road, about 40 minutes. Fuel at Bangchak retail runs ฿39.94 for gasohol 95, ฿41.44 for diesel B7 and ฿50.05 for premium diesel per litre. Fill up before you leave the ring road.
