Car rental taxes and fees in Orlando
At Rent-Trip, every price you see is a base rate before taxes and fees. Here's exactly what gets added, with a worked example, so you know what to expect.
Base Rate
All rates shown on this site, in quotes, and on our WhatsApp are base rates before taxes and fees. For example, an Economy car might be listed at $40/day.
Florida Sales Tax and County Surtax
We collect Florida sales tax (6%) plus the discretionary sales surtax of the county where the car is handed over. The total tax rate you pay depends on the pick-up location:
- Orange County (MCO, Orlando, International Drive, Lake Buena Vista, Universal area, Winter Park, Lake Nona, Dr. Phillips, etc.): 0.5% surtax – total 6.5%
- Osceola County (Kissimmee, US-192, Celebration): 1.5% surtax – total 7.5%
- Seminole County (Sanford / Lake Mary, SFB): 1.0% surtax – total 7.0%
- Polk and Lake: 1.0% surtax – total 7.0%
Tax is charged on the base rate plus the Florida rental car surcharge (below).
Florida Rental Car Surcharge
Florida law imposes a surcharge of $2.00 per day or part of a day on each rental, for the first 30 days only (FS 212.0606). This surcharge itself is subject to sales tax.
Tire and Battery Fee
A small daily fee of a few cents per day is added to help cover state-mandated recycling and disposal costs for tires and batteries.
Worked Example – 3 Days in Orange County
Suppose you rent a car at $40/day for 3 days, and the car is delivered in Orange County (e.g., at MCO or an Orlando hotel). Here's how the total is calculated:

Note: The tire and battery fee (a few cents per day) is not included in this example but would be added as a separate line. Taxes and fees are shown at checkout before you confirm.
No Airport Fees
Because we are an off-airport company and deliver your car to you (at MCO, SFB, or your hotel), we do not charge any airport concession recovery fee or customer facility charge that on-airport rental companies add to cover their airport rents and construction. You save that extra cost.
Tolls, Traffic-Camera and Parking Fines
Most expressways in Central Florida are cashless (SR 408, 417, 528, 429, 414, Turnpike). Tolls are not included in the base rate. You will be billed at actual cost for tolls incurred during your rental, plus an administrative fee (amount set in the rental agreement). Similarly, any traffic-camera or parking fines are passed on at actual cost plus an administrative fee (per the agreement).
Optional Items – Quoted at Booking
Optional items are not included in the base rate (liability coverage and the Loss Damage Waiver are already included). If you choose any of the following, the price will be quoted at booking:
- Child seat
- Additional driver
- Young driver fee (ages 21–24)
- Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)

Is the $2.00 per day surcharge charged after 30 days?
No. The Florida rental car surcharge applies only to the first 30 days of a rental. After day 30, no surcharge is added.
Which county tax rate applies if I pick up at MCO?
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is in Orange County, so the total tax rate is 6.5% (6% state sales tax + 0.5% county surtax).
Which county tax rate applies in Kissimmee?
Kissimmee is in Osceola County, so the total tax rate is 7.5% (6% state sales tax + 1.5% county surtax).
Are tolls included in the rental price?
No. Tolls are not included. You pay for actual tolls incurred during your rental, plus a small administrative fee. We provide a transponder in most cars, or you can use Toll-by-Plate.
Is sales tax charged on the rental car surcharge?
Yes. Florida sales tax applies to the total rental amount including the rental car surcharge, as required by law.
