Hand-over is arranged with a manager, and the place and the hour are confirmed in the same conversation as the booking. If your plans move — a later flight, a change of villa — tell the manager before the agreed slot, not after the car is already on its way.

Documents and Driving Rules for Mercedes-Benz Car Rental in Costa Brava

Spain applies one set of driving rules across the whole Costa Brava corridor, from the AP-7 motorway down to the GI-614 and C-260 coastal roads, so the paperwork you carry matters more than the region you drive through.

Licence, ID and what to have with you

• EU/EEA licence: valid in Spain exactly as issued, as long as it has not expired; no international permit is required on top of it.
• Non-EU licence: valid for driving here, but the DGT recommends getting an International Driving Permit before the trip and carrying it together with your passport and national licence.
• Licence not in Spanish: accepted either with an official sworn Spanish translation or if it follows the format of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.
• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: a supplementary document, valid one year, shown only alongside the passport and the national licence — 16 pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian.
• Passport or ID: the original in the main driver's name; companies ask for it even though the DGT sets no single rule.
• Card: which card is taken for the deposit, and whether a debit card works, is agreed when booking.

Speed limits, alcohol and the fines behind them

On the autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — the limit is 120 km/h, and on carretera convencional such as the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260 it drops to 90 km/h. Speeding penalties run from 100 EUR without points to 600 EUR with six points, and going more than 60 km/h over the limit in town or 80 km/h outside it turns the offence into a criminal one. The alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath for experienced drivers and 0.15 mg/l for anyone in their first two years, with anything above 0.60 mg/l treated as a crime; a phone held in the hand costs 200 EUR and six points, and an unbuckled belt or a child without a proper seat costs 200 EUR and four points. Child restraints are mandatory up to 135 cm, after which the standard belt is allowed for passengers under twelve. On a Mercedes-Benz V-Class 250d with seven seats, count the children first — the AMG G 63 seats five and leaves no room for a third row.

Paying a fine and keeping the car legal

Fines for parking and for unpaid motorway tolls fall on the owner or the renter of the car; for moving violations, drink-driving and drugs it is whoever was behind the wheel. If a violation is not handed over on the spot, the owner or renter answers until it is proven who was driving. A 50% discount applies if the fine is paid within 20 calendar days. If you are planning the run to Cap de Creus or over the border, tell the manager at booking — the territory covered by the agreement is agreed then, not on the road.

The roads you will actually use

• AP-7 (Vila-seca — La Jonquera): the whole corridor down to the border and back, free of charge since 01.09.2021, and the quickest way north or south.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the run towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar; the barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 (Barcelona — Montmeló): free since 01.09.2021, useful if you land at the airport serving the southern end of the coast.
• C-16 and the southern C-32: the Cadí and Vallvidrera tunnels and the Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell stretch, with the Vallcarca barrier at 8.42 € and Cubelles at 5.03 € (category 2). Neither sits on a Costa Brava route.

Distances and driving rules

Speed limits are 120 km/h on autopistas and autovías such as the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33, and 90 km/h on carreteras convencionales like the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260.

Crossing the border

Collioure is 114.9 km and about 89 minutes from the airport, and the route runs 8.4 km on the A 9 once you are over the border.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025, covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and operates 7–20 Monday to Friday on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display. Foreign plates can get a temporary authorisation if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements, and rental fleets in Spain carry the DGT badge, which exempts them from the restriction. The allowance is 24 days a year inside the restricted hours without a permit.

Zona blava and zona verda in Girona

• Zona blava: Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13 and 16–20, at €1.20 per hour with a two-hour maximum, so €2.40 in total; Sant Narcís runs to different hours.
• Zona verda for non-residents: also €1.20 per hour with a two-hour cap; Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday to Friday 9:30–13 and 17–20 and Saturday 9:30–13, while Güell–Devesa runs Monday to Saturday 8–20.
• What the ticket does: the parking receipt number has to match the car's plate, so keep the printed comprovant d'estacionament on the dashboard rather than in your pocket.

Parking in Lloret de Mar

The Can Lloranes car park holds 160 spaces and costs about €15 per day from 23 June to 11 September, and is free the rest of the time. The Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride holds 200 spaces, is free when you stay longer than 12 hours, and includes a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.

Tolls and the badge on your route

The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme and C-33 lost their barriers the same season, so the classic coastal runs cost nothing in tolls. The tolls that remain under the Generalitat sit on the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and on the C-32 south of Barcelona towards Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at €8.42 and Cubelles at €5.03 in category 2 — none of them on the routes to the coast resorts. Catalonia keeps discussing a return of motorway charging through a vignette or a usage fee, and no decision has been taken. Fill up before the last stretch: petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 per litre across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations, and diesel averages 1.922 — the coast runs about a cent higher, at 1.956 and 1.932.
