A week is charged as six days and a month as twenty-one, so the longer you book, the lower the effective daily figure. At the Economy end that means a week from $180 and a month from $630; a Crossover week works out from $234, an SUV week from $414.

Driving in Georgia on a foreign licence is straightforward, but a few local rules catch visitors out — especially the alcohol limit, the rear-seat belt rule and the winter tyre window.

What you need to drive on a Georgian rental car

• Foreign licence: valid for up to one year from your date of entry into Georgia, with no exchange required.
• IDP or certified translation: needed only if your licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic script. Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention.
• Passport and valid licence: the two documents a Georgian rental company asks to see when the agreement is drawn up.
• Legal basis: recognition and exchange of foreign licences is set by the Law of Georgia on Road Traffic and an order of the Minister of Internal Affairs.
• Age and experience: agreed when booking — this is a rental company's own condition, not a rule of Georgian law.

Speed limits, belts and the alcohol rule

The urban limit is 60 km/h, dropping to 20 km/h in residential zones; outside built-up areas category B runs at 90 km/h and motorways at 110 km/h, or 80 km/h with a light trailer. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers — rear belts are not compulsory under Georgian law, though we would still put them on. Phones work hands-free only, both hands on the wheel. The alcohol limit is 0.3 ‰ (0.03 %). Children under 3 must travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, or on the lap of a passenger aged 16 or over in the back; children under 6 cannot be left alone in a parked car.

Fines, and what winter changes

Speeding by 15–40 km/h costs 50 ₾, over 40 km/h costs 150 ₾, a phone offence 30 ₾, an unbuckled belt 40 ₾, running a red light 50 ₾ and unpaid parking 50 ₾. Driving without a licence is 500 ₾, and there is a 20 % discount for paying within 10 days; 100 points in a year means losing the licence. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones chains on at least two front wheels may be required in severe weather.

Parking in the capital, and how to pay it

• Payment: the Tbilisi Parking app, parking meters and terminals, or the parking.tbilisi.gov.ge portal.
• Fines and towing: an unpaid-parking fine is 50 lari; towing costs 150 lari plus 20 lari a day for storage.
• Underground car parks in the centre: Freedom Square around 2–3 lari an hour, Rike about 7 lari a day, Orbeliani Square roughly 1–2 lari an hour.
• Season passes: not needed for a short rental — a week costs 4 lari, a year 50 lari, and an all-inclusive annual permit 800 lari.

Tolls, mountain roads and the one winter rule

Every international and domestic road in Georgia is free to use: the Roads Department stated on 10.06.2026 that use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge, with no change planned, and there are no vignettes or transponders. The 52 km Rikoti section on the east–west E60, opened on 29.12.2025 with 51 tunnels and 97 bridges, is free as well. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least two front wheels are required in government-defined zones under special weather conditions. The Jvari Pass on the Georgian Military Highway reaches 2,379 m and closes when avalanche risk is high — check the road status the morning you plan to cross, not the evening before.

Mountain routes from the capital and what the weather does to them

The S3 Georgian Military Highway runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, and its highest point is the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. Upper sections take landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is declared. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m by the pass, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the city, and the ski season there runs from early December to mid-April. Distances from Freedom Square: Gudauri 121 km, Stepantsminda 153 km, Bakuriani 184 km, Borjomi 160 km.

What to book for mountain driving

• Seven seats: Nissan Pathfinder, Mazda CX-9 and Mercedes-Benz GL 450 4MATIC carry 7 passengers, which matters if the whole group is going to the mountains in one car.

Snow inside the city, and what to do about parking

On-street parking is zonal — from 1 ₾ an hour after the first 15 free minutes — and drivers pay through the Tbilisi Parking app or at terminals. In heavy snow, covered parking is the better choice: Freedom Square runs about 2–3 ₾ an hour, Rike about 7 ₾ a day. If you are staying in a hotel with a garage, use it and leave the car there for the day.

Trips worth taking with a rental car

• Sighnaghi and Kakheti wine country: 109 km east, with Telavi at 93 km and Kvareli at 142 km for a longer loop.
• David Gareja: 98 km southeast, a semi-desert monastery complex where the last stretch is rough gravel.

Kazbegi, Gudauri and the mountain roads

The Georgian Military Road, the S3, runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, passing Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, and tops out at the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. Stepantsminda sits 153 km from Freedom Square and Gudauri 121 km, which is two to two and a half hours in normal conditions.
