Getting around in Phuket is easiest on a scooter: it slips through traffic, needs little space to park and keeps your day on your own schedule. Take one for a day of errands or keep it for the whole stay — we help you choose the engine size for your plans and your licence.

Short hops around town

Errands, cafés and meetings across town without waiting for a taxi. A light scooter is easy to handle in traffic and needs little space to park.

Day trips out of town

Viewpoints, villages and quiet roads beyond the centre. A larger engine keeps pace on faster roads and carries a passenger more comfortably.

Renting a Scooter on Phuket: Models, Prices and Road Rules

Published Updated

Scooter rental in Phuket starts at ฿200 a day for a Honda Wave 110, and the 32 models on this page run up to ฿2,500 a day for a 745 cc Honda X-ADV. A week often costs six daily rates and a month twenty. Riders need a motorcycle-category licence with an International Driving Permit, and a helmet for both seats.

What a day costs in each engine class

Engine size explains most of the price gap between the cheapest and the dearest model on the island. The 32 models on this Rent-Trip page split into five classes, and neighbouring classes overlap only at their edges.

Five classes and their price range

Engine classModelsPrice per dayExamples
110 cc4฿200–250Honda Wave 110, Scoopy 110, Zoomer-X 110, Moove 110
125 cc11฿210–350Honda Click 125i, Yamaha Fino 125, Vespa LX 125, Honda PCX 125
150–160 cc10฿300–500Yamaha NMAX 155, Honda Click 160, PCX 160, ADV 160
300–350 cc4฿800–900Yamaha XMAX 300, Honda Forza 300, Forza 350, ADV 350
560–745 cc3฿2,200–2,500Yamaha TMAX 560, Honda Forza 750, X-ADV 750

Where the jumps in price come from

Up to 160 cc, the whole spread is ฿200 to ฿500 a day — a small step for a rider choosing between a basic runabout and a larger maxi-scooter. Even inside one class the gap is real: in the 125 cc group, the PCX 125 at ฿350 costs ฿140 a day more than the Yamaha GT 125 at ฿210. Then the price climbs. The cheapest scooter in the 300–350 cc group, at ฿800, costs 60% more than the dearest 160 cc model at ฿500. The next step is steeper still: the 560 cc TMAX at ฿2,200 is more than double the ฿900 Honda ADV 350.

All 32 models carry two people, so seating does not separate one class from another. What changes is the engine size and the price. Honda accounts for 19 of the 32 models and Yamaha for 10; the remaining three are a Vespa, a GPX and a Malaguti. A rider who knows Honda's naming will recognise most of the range, and the same family names — Click, PCX, ADV, Forza — appear at more than one engine size.

Every price in this article is a daily rate unless it says otherwise. Weekly and monthly prices follow different arithmetic and get a section of their own below.

Matching the model to the trip

The right scooter depends on how far you plan to ride, whether there is a passenger, and how many days you need it. Four model families recur across the 125 to 350 cc range. Each model card on this Rent-Trip page shows the engine size and the daily rate; the table puts six Honda models next to the Yamaha NMAX.

Click, NMAX, PCX and ADV side by side

ModelEngineClassPrice per day
Click 125i125 ccautomatic฿250
Click 160160 ccautomatic฿300
Yamaha NMAX 155155 ccmaxi-scooter฿350
PCX 125125 ccmaxi-scooter฿350
PCX 160160 ccmaxi-scooter฿450
ADV 160160 ccadventure scooter฿500
ADV 350350 ccadventure scooter฿900

The Click is the cheapest of the four families: ฿250 for the 125i and ฿300 for the Click 160. The PCX and the NMAX are maxi-scooters in the same engine range and start ฿100 higher, at ฿350. The ADV is an adventure-style scooter; the 160 sits at ฿500 and the 350 at ฿900.

The PCX comes in three engine sizes on the island: the PCX 125 at ฿350, the PCX 150 at ฿400 and the PCX 160 at ฿450. The Click has a middle size too: a Click 150i at ฿350. When a quote names only "PCX" or "Click", ask which engine size it means, because the difference is up to ฿100 a day.

Retro and hybrid models

Not every scooter offered under moped rental in Phuket is a plain automatic. Three retro-styled models are available: the Yamaha Fino 125 at ฿250, the Honda Giorno+ 125 at ฿280 and the Vespa LX 125 at ฿320. Two Yamaha hybrids sit in the same 125 cc class: the Fazzio Hybrid at ฿280 and the Grand Filano Hybrid at ฿290. The Honda Wave 110 at ฿200 is the odd one out: it is a semi-automatic, so the rider changes gears with the foot, without a clutch lever. If you have only ridden automatics, choose something else.

The big scooters, 560 to 745 cc

Three large scooters complete the range: the Yamaha TMAX 560 at ฿2,200, the Honda Forza 750 at ฿2,400 and the Honda X-ADV 750 at ฿2,500. The X-ADV price applies to rentals of three days or more. Per day they cost nine to ten times a Click 125i, and they are often priced as weekly or monthly packages, covered in the next section. For a rider who wants one big scooter for a long stay, the monthly rate changes the comparison considerably.

Weekly and monthly rates, and the low-season cut

The rental term can cut the daily price of the same scooter by a third or more. One delivery shop on the island prices eight models by the day, the week and the month, which makes the pattern easy to read. Seven of them are Honda models; the eighth is the Yamaha NMAX.

Day, week and month for eight models

ModelPer dayPer weekPer monthDeposit
Scoopy 110฿250฿900฿3,000฿3,000
Wave 110฿250฿900฿2,800฿3,000
Click 125i฿250฿1,500฿5,000฿3,000
Click 160฿300฿1,800฿6,000฿5,000
Yamaha NMAX 155฿350฿2,100฿7,000฿5,000
PCX 160฿450฿2,700฿9,000฿5,000
ADV 160฿500฿3,000฿10,000฿5,000
ADV 350฿1,000฿6,000฿20,000฿10,000

Six days and twenty days: the arithmetic

On six of these eight models, the weekly price equals exactly six daily rates: ฿1,500 for the Click 125i against ฿250 a day, ฿2,700 for the PCX 160 against ฿450. The month equals twenty daily rates on the same six models — ฿5,000 for the Click 125i, ฿9,000 for the PCX 160. In practice, a week buys one day free, and a month costs two-thirds of thirty single days.

The two 110 cc models break the pattern. The Scoopy and the Wave cost ฿900 a week — 3.6 daily rates — and ฿3,000 and ฿2,800 a month. For a long stay on a budget, monthly scooter rental in Phuket is cheapest on these small scooters: ฿2,800 a month for the Wave works out to about ฿93 a day.

Another shop prices a Honda Moove 110 at ฿250 a day, ฿1,500 a week and ฿3,800 a month, and a Honda PCX 125 at ฿350, ฿2,100 and ฿6,000. The weekly figures again equal six days, while the monthly ones are lower than twenty days. So the six-and-twenty rule is common, not universal: always ask for the week and month figures on the exact model.

The weekly price also helps on stays that do not fit a neat week. Ten days on a Click 125i at the delivery shop cost ฿2,500 at the daily rate, or ฿2,250 as one week plus three single days — ฿250 less for the same scooter. Ask whether a shop will combine terms like this before you pay ten daily rates.

Longer-term tiers and minimum terms

Some shops cut the daily rate in steps as the rental gets longer. For the Honda Giorno, one shop charges ฿400 a day for three to five days, ฿350 for six to ten and ฿300 for eleven to twenty. The Honda X-ADV follows the same logic at ฿2,500, ฿2,000 and ฿1,800 a day. For the big scooters, long terms are also priced as packages: ฿11,499 a week and ฿44,999 a month for the X-ADV 750, ฿41,999 a month for the TMAX 560.

A shop in Chalong rents only for seven days or more, with its lowest daily rates reserved for rentals of three weeks and longer. Short-stay visitors should check the minimum term before comparing daily prices — a cheap rate you cannot book for two days is not a real option.

May to October discount

A shop in Kamala that rents scooters alongside big bikes gives 20% off in the low season, from 15 May to 15 October, on rentals of six days or more. At that shop, the Honda Click 150i drops from ฿350 to ฿280 a day, the PCX 150 from ฿400 to ฿320, the ADV 160 from ฿500 to ฿400, the XMAX 300 and Forza 300 from ฿800 to ฿640, and the ADV 350 from ฿900 to ฿720. A two-day rental in June does not qualify — the discount and the six-day threshold come together.

Licence category and the International Driving Permit

Before you rent a scooter in Phuket, check which categories your licence actually covers. Rental guides for the island describe the same requirement.

What the rule asks for

A rider needs a valid driving licence from the home country in the motorcycle category, plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Rental guides list the two documents together, so carry both on every ride.

The requirement is stated for scooters in general, so a ฿200 Honda Wave 110 needs the same documents as a ฿2,500 X-ADV 750. If the motorcycle category is missing, the price of the machine makes no difference to the risk.

Why a car licence is not enough

A car licence alone does not cover a scooter. Whatever a shop asks for at the handover, the documents are checked at roadside checkpoints, and they decide what happens after a crash.

Riding without the correct category is the single most common reason foreign riders lose an insurance claim after an accident. That is the real cost of the missing licence: a fine at the roadside is measured in hundreds of baht, a refused claim after a fall can cost far more. If your licence has no motorcycle category, a taxi or a car rented on your existing car licence is the safer plan.

Helmets, checkpoints and fines

Phuket's police run regular roadside checks aimed at riders. Knowing where and when they happen is useful, but the simpler protection is to carry the right documents and wear a helmet every time.

Helmets for rider and passenger

Under Thai law, helmets are required for both the rider and the passenger. Every one of the 32 models here is a two-seater, so with a passenger you need two helmets, and each must be worn. Ask for the second helmet when you book rather than at the handover, and check that both fasten properly.

Where and when checks happen

  • Locations: Karon Circle, the approaches to Chalong Circle, the Patong hill road on the Kathu side, Thepkrasattri Road heading north, and central Phuket Town intersections.
  • Time of day: the peak is 09:00 to 11:00, with checks occasionally in the late afternoon; they are rare after dark and in heavy rain.
  • Order of checks: helmet first, then licence, and sometimes the scooter's registration or tax sticker.

Fines and receipts

OffenceTypical fineIn Click 125i rental days
Riding without a helmet฿400–2,0001.6 to 8 days
No valid motorcycle licence฿500–1,0002 to 4 days

Fines are paid at the roadside desk or at the police station, and you should get a receipt for every payment. For most tourist fines, police do not hold the licence. If they do keep it until the fine is paid, the receipt shows where to pay and collect it, usually at the district station on the same day.

Deposit, insurance and the handover

The daily rate is only part of the money involved. A deposit, the limits of compulsory insurance and the condition of the scooter at handover all decide what a rental finally costs.

Two ways shops take a deposit

Deposits on the island follow two patterns. One delivery shop holds the deposit as a card pre-authorisation — no cash changes hands and no passport is kept: ฿3,000 for the 110–125 cc models, ฿5,000 for the 155–160 cc models and ฿10,000 for the ADV 350. A shop in Patong takes a cash deposit of ฿3,000 to ฿15,000 depending on the bike, and keeps only a photocopy of the passport, never the original.

On a short rental the deposit can be larger than the rent itself: two days on a Click 160 cost ฿600, while the hold on the card is ฿5,000. Both patterns agree on one point: the original passport stays with you. If a shop asks to keep it, that is a reason to compare other offers.

What Por Ror Bor covers

Por Ror Bor is Thailand's compulsory motor insurance, and most rental scooters already carry it. It covers only injury to other people. Damage to the scooter and injuries to the rider are outside it. When a quote says "insurance included", ask what that insurance covers beyond Por Ror Bor and what you pay if the scooter is damaged. Remember the licence rule above: without the motorcycle category, a claim may be refused whatever the policy says.

Photos, fuel and the return

Before you ride off, photograph the scooter from all four sides, including the odometer and any scratches, and send the photos to yourself so they carry a time stamp. That record is your evidence if damage is disputed at the return.

Fuel is a separate cost. Budget ฿100 to ฿150 for a full tank every two to three days of normal riding. Over a week with a Click 125i on the weekly rate, that adds roughly ฿230 to ฿525 to the ฿1,500 rental — worth counting when you compare a cheaper offer far from your hotel with a delivered one.

Pick-up, delivery and a pre-ride checklist

For scooter rental in Phuket, the pick-up point decides how the scooter reaches you and where you hand it back. Delivery saves a taxi ride, while a shop close to your hotel makes returns easy.

Delivery and pick-up areas

One shop delivers to hotels and villas across the island and includes a helmet and delivery in its price. A shop in Choeng Thale delivers on rentals of three days or more, and the Kamala shop combines an office with delivery. Models are also offered in Rawai, Chalong, Kamala, Patong Beach, Kata Beach and Phuket Town, spread across the west coast, the south of the island and the town. When you compare two offers, compare the total for your dates including delivery, not only the daily rate.

Electric scooters: what is and is not allowed

Standing electric kick-scooters are banned from public roads in Phuket, cannot be registered as vehicles and carry a fine of up to ฿10,000. None of the 32 models here is fully electric. The nearest option is one of the two Yamaha hybrids, the Fazzio Hybrid 125 and the Grand Filano Hybrid 125, both priced like ordinary 125 cc automatics.

Checklist before you ride

  • Licence: a home licence with the motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit, both carried on every ride.
  • Helmets: two helmets if you ride with a passenger, fastened, every time.
  • Term: ask for the week and month price on the exact model; a week often equals six days and a month twenty.
  • Season: between 15 May and 15 October, check whether a low-season discount applies from six days.
  • Deposit: card pre-authorisation or cash, with the original passport staying with you.
  • Insurance: compulsory cover pays only for injury to others; ask what covers the scooter.
  • Handover: photos from four sides, odometer included, sent to yourself with a time stamp.
  • Fuel: ฿100–150 per tank every two to three days.

FAQ

How much does scooter rental in Phuket cost per day?

Prices start at ฿200 a day for a Honda Wave 110. 125 cc models cost ฿210–350 a day, 150–160 cc models ฿300–500, 300–350 cc maxi-scooters ฿800–900, and the big 560–745 cc scooters ฿2,200–2,500.

Is it cheaper to rent a scooter by the week or by the month?

Both are cheaper per day than single days. On many models a week costs six daily rates and a month twenty: a Honda Click 125i is ฿250 a day, ฿1,500 a week and ฿5,000 a month. Small 110 cc scooters can go lower, with a Honda Wave 110 at ฿2,800 a month.

Do I need a motorcycle licence to ride a scooter in Phuket?

Yes. Rental guides for the island ask for a valid home licence in the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. A car licence alone does not cover a scooter.

What is the fine for riding without a helmet in Phuket?

Typical fines are ฿400–2,000 for riding without a helmet and ฿500–1,000 for having no valid motorcycle licence. Helmets are required for both rider and passenger, and you should get a receipt for any fine you pay.

Where are the police checkpoints for riders in Phuket?

The most consistent spots are Karon Circle, the approaches to Chalong Circle, the Patong hill road on the Kathu side, Thepkrasattri Road heading north and central Phuket Town intersections. Checks peak between 09:00 and 11:00.

How much is the deposit, and will the shop keep my passport?

It depends on the shop and the scooter. One pattern is a card pre-authorisation of ฿3,000–10,000 with no passport kept; another is a cash deposit of ฿3,000–15,000 with only a photocopy of the passport. The original passport stays with you in both cases.

Does scooter rental include insurance?

Most rental scooters carry Por Ror Bor, Thailand's compulsory insurance, but it covers only injury to other people, not damage to the scooter or injuries to the rider. Riding without the correct licence category is the most common reason foreign riders lose an insurance claim.

Is there a low-season discount on scooter rental in Phuket?

Some shops give one. A shop in Kamala takes 20% off between 15 May and 15 October on rentals of six days or more, so a Honda ADV 350 drops from ฿900 to ฿720 a day.

Can I rent an electric scooter in Phuket?

Standing electric kick-scooters are banned from public roads in Phuket, with fines of up to ฿10,000. None of the 32 models here is fully electric; the Yamaha Fazzio Hybrid 125 and Grand Filano Hybrid 125 are hybrids.
