Georgia drives on the right, and the rules that matter most to a visitor are simple: 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them and 110 km/h on motorways. Fuel, parking and a handful of local habits are what actually shape a day behind the wheel.
Speed limits, seat belts and the alcohol rule
- Built-up areas: 60 km/h; in residential zones the limit drops to 20 km/h.
- Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h for a category B car, 110 km/h on a motorway and 80 km/h with a light trailer.
- Seat belts: compulsory for the driver and front passengers; rear belts are not required by law.
- Phone: hands-free or a headset only, with both hands on the wheel.
- Children under 3: a child seat or restraint on the rear seat, matched to height and weight.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.3 permille (0.03 %) — effectively zero for most drivers.
Parking in the centre
Street parking is zonal: from 1 lari an hour, with the first 15 minutes free. Payment goes through the Tbilisi Parking app or the on-street terminals, and the city portal at parking.tbilisi.gov.ge lets you search by a transit or foreign plate. If you would rather not think about it, the underground car parks in the centre are the easy answer: around 2–3 lari an hour at Freedom Square, roughly 7 lari a day at Rike, and about 1–2 lari an hour at Orbeliani Square.
Fuel, tolls and winter tyres
Petrol costs about 4.06 lari a litre and diesel about 4.76 lari, roughly 17 % more. Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, with no vignettes or transponders, and the new Rikoti section on the east–west E60 — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes — is free as well. The one seasonal rule to remember is winter tyres, compulsory from 1 December to 1 March; in zones designated by the government and in particular weather, chains on at least two front wheels may be required. The Military Highway north — Kazbegi and Gudauri
We hand over the Kia Sportage for the run up the S3, the Georgian Military Highway: 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, with the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m as the high point. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m and is usually 2–2.5 hours from the capital; the resort season runs from early December to mid-April. All-wheel drive on the Sportage is the reason we suggest it here — the upper sections take snow and landslides, and the pass closes when avalanche danger is declared. From Freedom Square the distances come to 121 km to Gudauri, 153 km to Stepantsminda, 66 km to Ananuri and 26 km to Mtskheta. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-defined zones chains on at least two front wheels may be required. On a mountain route, check the pass status the morning you leave rather than the night before.
Short runs and wine country — Mtskheta, Sighnaghi, Kakheti
Mtskheta is 26 km from Freedom Square, Uplistsikhe and Gori 95 km and 86 km, Sighnaghi 109 km, Telavi 93 km and Kvareli 142 km. Fuel is petrol only: ₾4.06 a litre as of 21.09.2026, with diesel at ₾4.76, about 17% more. Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, and the Road Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that no change is planned — there are no vignettes and no transponders to buy. The Rikoti section of the E60 between east and west, 52 km with 51 tunnels and 97 bridges, opened on 29.12.2025 and is also free. Keep some cash or a card ready for parking instead: zonal street parking runs from ₾1 an hour after the first 15 minutes free.
Longer routes worth planning
- Vardzia: 225 km, a full day out — leave early and treat the drive back as part of the trip.
- David Gareja: 98 km south-east into the semi-desert; the last kilometres are unpaved, which favours the Sportage.
- Sadakhlo border crossing: 70 km to the Armenian side; a rental car goes there only with our driver.

A car here carries Georgian plates, so the compulsory cover for foreign vehicles under matsne law 3949505 does not apply to it. What you can add is CDW or Super CDW — full cover for the car, the driver and the passengers. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard insurance, so keep bags out of sight when you park.
