Seat belts are required for the driver and front passengers — rear belts are not compulsory by law, which is worth knowing before you wave a third passenger into the back. Children under three must travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, and a child under six may not be left alone in a parked car. • Mountain roads: the S3 to Stepantsminda climbs to the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. Upper sections see landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is high. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m on the same road, 121 km from Freedom Square, usually 2–2.5 hours.
