The cheapest three models sit at the same €19, so the choice at the bottom of the range is about seats and fuel, not price.

Weekly and monthly rates

A week starts at €114 and a month at €399, because weekly is the daily rate × 6 and monthly is the daily rate × 21. Those multipliers are the only ones we use: seven days of Economy at €19 come to €114, and twenty-one days come to €399. The longer tiers are calculated from the same daily figure, so a cheaper model lowers the weekly and monthly totals too. On the €34 Electric model the same arithmetic gives €204 for a week and €714 for a month, which is why the class you pick matters more over a long stay than over a weekend. If your dates are fixed, we confirm the exact total when you book — the rental agreement carries the final figure, not the page.

What moves the price

• Class: Economy holds 23 of the 24 cars from €19, so most bookings never leave the lower band.
• Model inside the class: the Fiat Panda, Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto all sit at €19, while the Toyota Yaris and DS DS 3 reach €28–€29.
• Length of booking: the weekly and monthly tiers are built from the daily rate, so a long stay spreads the same cost differently.
• Gearbox: automatic cars cluster at the top of Economy and in Electric, which is where the €29–€34 prices are.
• Season: August is the busiest month in the city by nights stayed, so the models at €19 go first.

Deposit, insurance excess and any delivery fee are set out in the rental agreement, and the manager confirms them before you sign. Ask for the total for your exact dates rather than comparing daily figures alone — a four-day booking on a €19 car and a seven-day booking on the same car are priced on different tiers, and the gap surprises people who only look at the day rate.

Economy class

Economy is the core of our daily car rental in Barcelona with 23 cars from €19 a day, all hatchbacks with 4 or 5 seats. The floor of the class is crowded: Fiat Panda, Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto all sit at €19, and the next step up — Fiat Pandina, Toyota Aygo — costs €20. From there the ladder climbs through Dacia Sandero and Fiat 500 at €22, Kia Rio at €23, and a wide €24–€26 band that holds Citroen C3, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia and MG MG3. Two models at the top carry an automatic gearbox: Lancia Ypsilon at €26 and Toyota Yaris at €29.

Most Economy cars are manual, so if you want an automatic, look at the top of the class rather than the bottom.

Electric class

The Electric class on this page is one car, the Fiat 500e at €34 a day, with an automatic gearbox and 4 seats. It is the only electric model in the 24-car line-up, and its 118 hp make it the most powerful car we list here. Charging is metered rather than subscription-based: the municipal Endolla Barcelona network bills per kWh used, which suits a short daily rental better than a monthly plan. Range and charging time depend on how you drive and where you plug in, so plan the day around one charging stop rather than two.

An electric car earns the 0 emisiones badge, which matters for the low-emission zone described further down. If your route stays inside the ZBE Rondes BCN, the blue 0 emisiones sticker removes the registration question entirely.

Models and specs

Seats and fuel type vary more than price inside Economy, so match the model to your luggage and passengers first. A 4-seat Panda and a 5-seat Skoda Fabia cost €19 and €25 respectively, and the difference between them is the seating and the body rather than the engine. What we cannot do is promise a fixed address in advance — the hand-over spot depends on where you are staying and on the car, and the manager settles it with you directly. Every booking is agreed with a manager, who confirms the model, the dates and the hand-over in one conversation. Nothing is charged or locked in before that confirmation — you get a named person to write to, not an automated queue. Ask about the fuel policy and the return level at this stage, because both are fixed in the rental agreement rather than decided at the kerb. The minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge and the cards accepted also belong to this conversation — they are agreed when booking.

What to have ready

• Driving licence: an EU or EEA licence is fully valid in Spain while it has not expired; a licence from outside the EEA is valid for driving here, and the DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip.
• Licence in a non-Latin script: a third-country licence works either with an official certified translation into Spanish or if it was issued under the Geneva or Vienna Convention model — otherwise the international permit is the practical route.
• Passport or ID: the original document in the name of the main driver.
• Bank card: a credit card in the name of the main driver, for the deposit.
• Booking details: the agreed delivery point, the time window and the return level, confirmed with the manager.

One more thing worth doing on the day: walk round the car with the person handing it over and get every scratch or dent written into the rental agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive off. The copy stays with you — Spanish consumer rules put the damage on the renter otherwise.

Driving a Daily Rental Car into the City Centre

Barcelona restricts vehicle access to the centre through the Zona de Bajas Emisiones Rondas de Barcelona (ZBE Rondes BCN), and a rental car needs the right environmental badge to enter legally. The zone covers more than 95 km² — the whole municipality except the Zona Franca industrial estate and the Vallvidrera – el Tibidabo i les Planes neighbourhood — plus L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat. It operates on working days, Monday to Friday.

Which badge your car needs

• 0 emisiones (blue badge): battery-electric cars such as the Fiat 500e, which is the single Electric model on this page at €34 a day.
• ECO (blue-green badge): hybrids and plug-in hybrids, including the Fiat Pandina, Fiat 500, Lancia Ypsilon, Toyota Yaris and MG MG3.
• Petrol and LPG cars: the Fiat Panda, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Dacia Sandero and the rest of our Economy hatchbacks fall outside these two categories.

Speed limits inside the city

Speeding is graded by the DGT table: 100 EUR with no points at the bottom, then 300 EUR with 2 points, 400 EUR with 4, 500 EUR with 6 and 600 EUR with 6 at the top. A phone held in the hand costs 200 EUR and 6 points, and an unfastened belt or a child without the required seat is 200 EUR and 4 points. Child seats are compulsory up to 135 cm of height.

Parking and tolls

Street parking in the blue zone is metered by the hour, and the rate is set out in the rental agreement. The Túnels de Vallvidrera on the C-16, the tunnel that takes you out towards Sant Cugat and the Vallès, costs 4.7 EUR for a car. In our experience, the badge question comes up more often than the toll does — travellers book the cheapest Economy car and only then discover it carries no ECO sticker, so match the model to the zone before you confirm the booking rather than at the barrier.

Documents for Daily Car Rental in Barcelona

Spanish rental paperwork splits cleanly in two: what the law of Spain accepts as a driving licence, and what the rental agreement asks of the driver. We confirm both at booking, so nothing is left to the kerb.

Licence rules for EU, EEA and third-country drivers

An EU or EEA licence — including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — is fully valid in Spain until its own expiry date, and no international permit is needed alongside it. A licence from outside the EU or EEA works for a visitor if it is still in force and the holder is old enough for the equivalent Spanish category; once you take up ordinary residence in Spain, that licence is accepted for six months from the date residence begins, after which it must be exchanged. Spain's DGT advises third-country drivers to obtain an international driving permit before travelling, though it is an additional document rather than a replacement: the Permiso Internacional de Conducción runs for one year and is shown only together with your passport and your national licence.

The documents we ask for at booking

• Passport or ID: the original, in the name of the main driver — a rental-company requirement rather than a DGT rule, since Spain sets no single national standard here.
• Driving licence: the original physical document, matching the main driver named on the agreement.
• Credit card: held in the main driver's name for the deposit; debit cards are not accepted everywhere, and which cards work is a condition of the individual rental company, not a matter of Spanish law.
• International permit or sworn translation: only where your national licence is not in Spanish and does not follow the Geneva or Vienna model.

Who answers for a fine on a rental car

Parking tickets and unpaid motorway tolls fall on the owner or the renter of the car, while moving violations, drink-driving and drug offences fall on whoever was behind the wheel. Where a violation is not handed over at the roadside, DGT names both vehículos de alquiler and de renting as the party answerable until it is established who was actually driving. Keep the rental agreement and the hand-over sheet in the car for the whole hire — that is what identifies the driver when a notice arrives weeks later.

Daily Car Rental in Barcelona Insurance and Deposit

The daily rate on this page already includes the compulsory cover that Spanish law requires on every hire car, while the deposit, the excess and any extra protection are set out in the rental agreement.

What is always included

Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is part of any booking in Spain and applies even if the driver at the wheel was not named in the agreement. It does not cover the driver or the car itself. At Rent-Trip we do not add this as an option — it is the baseline of our daily car hire in Barcelona, and it is why the €19 rate is the full starting price rather than a stripped-down one.

Optional protection

• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): reduces your liability for damage to the car in a collision with another vehicle or an object, down to the excess rather than the full repair cost.
• THW (Theft Protection): covers full or partial theft of the car and vandalism, again above the excess.
• SCDW and SPCDW: partial and full buy-out of the excess that CDW leaves with you; neither works if CDW itself was not taken.
• STHW and SPTHW: the same logic applied to the theft excess rather than the collision excess.
• WWI (Glass and Tyres Protection): a separate option, because glass and tyres usually fall outside basic CDW.

The excess itself — franquicia — is the amount you pay yourself when there is damage, and it is printed in the agreement whether or not you buy a buy-out.

Deposit and the price you see

Its size is confirmed before you sign, so ask the manager at booking rather than at hand-over. Our rates from €19 to €34 a day follow that rule.

Checking the car over

Walk around the car before you drive off and make sure every scratch and dent is written into the agreement or the inspection sheet. Both sides sign that document and you keep a copy — without it, damage found later can be pinned on you. If the model you booked is not available, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even a higher class; if you are given a lower class, the price should come down.

• Parking at the other end: AREA Blava A and AREA Blava B are the two blue-zone tariffs, which is why long-stay car parks beat street parking on a full-day loop.
• Charging, if you take the electric: EcoOne bills by actual use with no subscription, at 0.49 per kWh — a tourist mode that suits a rented EV.

Where a day actually fits

Sitges is the shortest run and the easiest to fold into an afternoon. Montserrat and the Penedès sit inland and pair naturally with each other, while the Costa Brava and Girona stretch the day further north. Tarragona and PortAventura work as one trip in the same direction. Andorra and the Pyrenees are the longest of the set and the ones most sensitive to how early you leave.

Two things change those plans. The ZBE Rondes BCN covers more than 95 km² — the whole municipality of Barcelona apart from the Zona Franca industrial area and the Vallvidrera – el Tibidabo i les Planes neighbourhood, plus L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat — and runs on working days, Monday to Friday.
