Licence, age and the deposit are the three things that decide whether hiring a BMW here goes smoothly, and each is settled before the keys change hands.

Which driving licences we accept

Licences from the EU and the EEA, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway included, are valid in Spain for as long as they stay in date, and no international permit is needed alongside them. A licence issued outside the EU or EEA works if it is still valid, if you are old enough in Spain for the equivalent category, and if no more than six months have passed since you took up ordinary residence here; the DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip. A licence not written in Spanish is accepted either with an official certified translation or where it follows the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. The Permiso Internacional de Conducción is a supporting document only: it is shown together with your passport and your national licence, runs for one year, and comes as a grey triptych with 16 pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian.

Age, card and the deposit

• Minimum driving age: you may drive in Spain from 18 for category B; the minimum age for renting and any young-driver surcharge are agreed when booking, not fixed by law.
• Card: which card is accepted for the deposit is agreed when booking; debit cards are not taken everywhere, and that is a rental condition rather than a rule of Spain.
• Deposit: a preautorización blocks a sum on the card against possible damage and extras; the amount is confirmed before you sign and is set out in the rental agreement.
• Young-driver surcharge: where it applies, the fee is part of the booking terms and is agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
• What the advertised price must include: by Spanish consumer rules the price you are quoted has to carry every compulsory charge you cannot drive without, the mandatory third-party cover among them.

Bringing your own paperwork

The car arrives clean and with a full tank, and it goes back the same way: full-to-full, or the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Walk the car with whoever delivers it and get every scratch and dent written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you drive off, signed by both sides with your copy kept — that sheet is what protects you from a damage claim later. If the BMW you booked is not the one handed over, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even a class above; if the car does not match the contract, the booking can be cancelled and the prepayment returned.

Tolls on the routes you will actually drive

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole Barcelona — Girona — border corridor, free since 01.09.2021.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the run from BCN towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar, barriers removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): the only Generalitat tolls left; neither sits on a Costa Brava route.
• Catalonia: a return of motorway charging (a vignette or a distance-based fee) is under discussion — no decision has been taken.

The Girona low-emission zone

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It operates 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days, and restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona; cameras read number plates, so no sticker has to be displayed. Non-residents get 24 days a year inside the zone during restricted hours without a permit, and foreign plates can obtain a temporary authorisation if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. Our cars carry the Spanish rental fleet's DGT badge, so the zone does not restrict them.

Speeds and the roads that matter

On the Cap de Creus road, access is restricted through the season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September, 9:30–19:00 on set spring and autumn dates — so check the calendar before planning that drive.

Insurance and the rental agreement for BMW car rental in Costa Brava

Every BMW on this page is covered by the Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, which Spanish law includes in any rental and which applies even if the driver at the wheel is not named in the agreement. It pays third parties, not the car and not the driver: the legal limits are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR per incident for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. That baseline says nothing about who pays for a kerbed alloy on the GI-682 — that is what the optional waivers below are for.

What the optional waivers cover

• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): removes your liability for damage to the car itself after a collision with another vehicle or an object, except for the excess, or franquicia.
• THW (Theft Protection): covers full or partial theft and vandalism damage, again except for the excess amount.
• Franquicia: the excess you pay yourself on damage; it is printed in the rental agreement.

Two things the Spanish consumer authority does fix: the advertised price must already include every compulsory charge you cannot drive without, and every scratch or dent has to be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you leave, signed by both sides, with a copy for you. Without that record, damage found later is charged to the renter.

If the BMW you booked is not available, Spanish consumer rules let you ask for another car at no extra cost, even one class up, and if you are given a lower class the price has to come down; a car that does not match the agreed terms — an automatic, for instance — lets you cancel and recover the prepayment. On a seven-seat X7 in August, when foreign guests alone account for 67.6 % of overnight stays, that clause is worth reading before you hand over the card.
