Licence, passport and International Driving Permit

• Home driving licence: your national licence in force, carried alongside your passport for the whole hire period.
• International Driving Permit: Thailand recognises the 1949 Geneva Convention permit; it must be shown together with the home licence, never instead of it.
• Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the agreement.
• ASEAN nationals: citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence and do not need a permit.

Driving without an International Driving Permit where one is required carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident. That second consequence costs far more than the fine, so treat the permit as part of the booking rather than an optional extra.

Minimum age and how the rules fall for younger drivers

The minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the agreement we agree with you when booking. If you hold a licence from an ASEAN member state, you drive on it as it stands; everyone else brings the national licence plus the permit described above. For a two-car electric line-up like the Aion ES and Aion Y Plus, the paperwork is identical — there is no separate set of documents for a sedan against a crossover.

Delivery elsewhere is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site, so tell the manager where you need the car and we will confirm what is possible.

Tolls on the expressways and motorways

The city's urban expressways — Chaloem Maha Nakhon, Si Rat and the rest of the EXAT network — take cash or an Easy Pass tag, and M-PASS is accepted too; the tags are interchangeable but one car carries one. Motorway 7 toward Pattaya is metered by distance: from the Lat Krabang entrance it is ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya. Motorway 9 uses M-Flow, where a camera reads the plate and the bill follows without a barrier. On M-Flow, an unregistered driver can settle within two days by plate number; from the third day the tariff doubles, then a fine of ten times the tariff follows. Ask at hand-over whether a tag is already linked to the car.

Fines, cameras and the Low Emission Zone

Speed cameras on Motorway 7 issue the ticket to the registered owner — the rental company — and it is re-invoiced to the renter, so a fine can reach you after you have flown home. The city's Low Emission Zone, which covers all 50 districts and triggers when PM2.5 passes 75.1 µg/m³ in at least five of them, applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels; a five-seat GAC is outside its scope entirely. Petrol prices are irrelevant to an electric car, but if you ever top up a different vehicle, gasohol 95 stood at ฿39.94 a litre and diesel B7 at ฿41.44 on the Bangchak retail list.

Card, deposit and how you pay

A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the agreement — we do not name it on this page. The same card belongs to the person who signs, so a booking made by one traveller and driven by another needs the documents of the main driver, not of whoever pays the bill. VAT 7% is already inside the ฿1,250 daily rate, the ฿7,500 weekly rate and the ฿26,250 monthly rate, so the price you see is the price on the agreement. Anything beyond that — a delivery fee, a discount, a prepayment rule — is agreed when booking, with a manager, before the booking is fixed.

Traffic-camera fines in Thailand are issued to the car owner and then re-invoiced to the renter, which means a camera on Motorway 7 sends the notice to us first and we pass it to you. Driving without an International Driving Permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — that is the one piece of paperwork worth checking twice before you leave the airport.

Is GAC car rental in Bangkok worth it for your trip
