Rules that carry a fine

• Speed: 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them; the island has no motorway or divided four-lane road, so the higher national limits never apply here.
• Alcohol: The limit is 50 mg% in the blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; penalties run to a year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months. Refusing the test counts as an admission.
• Child seats: Children under 6 must ride in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a seat or a special restraint; the fine reaches ฿2,000. This applies to cars, pickups and minivans.
• Seat belts: Every passenger buckles up, including those in the back.
• Parking: Never stop at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb.

One habit worth building: the square blue tax stamp on the windscreen carries its year in the Buddhist calendar, which is the Gregorian year plus 543. Check that the stamp on your car is current before you pull away — an expired one is a conversation with the police you do not want.

Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without a permit. The police fine for driving without the permit runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident. Left-hand traffic, right-hand drive

The island's ring road runs 51 km and links the lowland and the coast, with every resort — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam — sitting on it. Expect potholes, sometimes deep, standing water after rain, oil patches left by refuse trucks and animals on the road. On a first day, stay on the ring road rather than cutting across the island on the interior lanes.
