Every car in the fleet is automatic and right-hand drive, and traffic in Thailand keeps to the LEFT. Take the car out along Second Road before you head anywhere else: Beach Road and Second Road run one-way anticlockwise, so you merge once and stay in the flow instead of turning across it. If you have never driven on the left, book your first collection for daylight — our deliveries in the dark are agreed when booking, but the first drive is easier in the morning.

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence, with no permit and no conversion. Bring the passport, the home licence, the permit and a bank card in the main driver's name: that card carries the security hold, and its amount sits in the rental agreement rather than in a price list. Driving without the permit carries a fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident — a cheap document to sort out at home, an expensive one to argue about at the roadside.

Minimum age and who may drive

The minimum driver age on our cars is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement. The licence has to be valid at the moment of the rental, not merely held.

The left-hand rule and the city's one-way pair

• Left, not right: traffic keeps to the LEFT here, and the steering wheel is on the right — your instincts from a right-hand-traffic country are wrong, so take a quiet loop before the main road.
• Beach Road and Second Road: the two run as a one-way pair anticlockwise, Beach Road southbound and Second Road northbound — a missed turn means a full circuit, not a U-turn.
• Speed limits: 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on Motorway 7, and a sign may lower any of these.
• Cameras on Motorway 7: the 120 km/h limit there is enforced primarily by speed cameras, and a camera fine is issued to the car owner — us — then re-invoiced to the renter.
• Children under six: a child seat to the TISI standard is required, and below 135 cm a belt or a special seat; the fine runs to ฿2,000.

On the first drive, pull out of the delivery address onto Second Road rather than Beach Road, and the anticlockwise pair works with you instead of against you.

Arriving on Motorway 7, you leave at the Pattaya Motorway Spur: Mab Prachan Interchange, then Nong Prue on road 3240, then the Pattaya Interchange onto Sukhumvit. Tolls on the whole run from Bangkok sit between ฿105 and ฿130, and Thaiger advises paying cash in a rental car.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo is 46.9 km, about 44 minutes, and Columbia Aquaverse at 22.3 km is 18 minutes from the centre. Further east, Chanthaburi is 169.7 km and about 129 minutes by road — a full-day run, not a half-day one. Silverlake at 26.2 km and the Ramayana water park at 27.8 km both fall inside the 25–28 minute band.

North to Bang Saen, Si Racha and Bangkok

Bang Saen is 47.6 km, about 38 minutes, and Si Racha 28.3 km, roughly 23 minutes — both are day-trip distances on Highway 3 Sukhumvit. Bangkok is 145.7 km and about 102 minutes by road, which makes it a long single-day return rather than a casual outing. Hua Hin, at 321.1 km, is 229 minutes each way: plan it as an overnight run, not a day trip. On Motorway 7 the limit is 120 km/h and speed cameras enforce it, so keep to the posted figure.

What to settle before a long run

• Toll payment: Motorway 7 takes cash in the left lanes or M-PASS and Easy Pass in the blue lanes; a rental car is easier to run on cash.
• One-way rules: Beach Road and Second Road run one-way anticlockwise, so leave the centre via Second Road and rejoin it the same way on return.
