Which licence works in Spain

• EU and EEA licences: fully valid in Spain for as long as they remain in force, with nothing extra to arrange — no international permit required.
• Licences from outside the EU and EEA: valid if the licence is current, if you are old enough in Spain for the equivalent category, and if no more than six months have passed since you took up ordinary residence in Spain. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before you travel.
• Licences not written in Spanish: accepted either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if they were issued on the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. An international permit is the alternative to a translation.
• International driving permit (Permiso Internacional de Conducción): a supplementary document — it is shown only together with your passport and your national licence. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) removes your financial liability for damage to the vehicle in a collision with another vehicle or an object, except for the franquicia — the excess you still pay yourself. Vandalism is excluded unless it happened while the car was in use. THW (Theft Protection) does the same for total or partial theft and for vandalism, again above the excess. SCDW and SPCDW buy down part or all of the CDW excess, and STHW and SPTHW do the same for the theft excess; neither works if the underlying CDW or THW was not bought or if an exclusion in it applies. WWI (Glass and Tyres Protection) is a separate option, because glass and tyres normally fall outside basic CDW. The excess is printed in the agreement whether or not you buy a waiver.

• Franquicia: the non-reducible sum you pay yourself after damage; printed in the agreement and set by the current price list (Tarifa General Vigente).
• Depósito: a preauthorisation blocked on a credit card to cover possible damage and extras; the amount is told to you before the agreement is signed.
• Fuel policy: lleno a lleno — the car goes out full and comes back full, with the details set out in the rental agreement.
• Territory: where the car may be driven, and whether an extension is needed, is agreed when booking.

What Spanish consumer rules give you

Before you drive off, every scratch and dent must be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet, the document is signed by both sides, and you keep a copy; without that, damage found later is charged to you. If the model you booked is not available, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even one class above; if you are given a lower class, the price has to come down, and if the car does not match the agreed conditions — automatic gearbox, four doors — the booking can be cancelled and what you put down up front returned, as Spanish consumer law provides.
