Mountain roads and the Gudauri season

The Military Road is the one to plan around. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the city, with the ski season running from early December to mid-April; winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least two front wheels in government-defined zones under special weather conditions. Distances from Freedom Square are 121 km to Gudauri and 153 km to Stepantsminda. Crossing into Armenia

The main crossing south is Sadakhlo–Bagratashen, about 80 km from the city (70 km to Sadakhlo), with Ninotsminda–Bavra as the second option. Tbilisi to Yerevan is around 280 km and 4–5 hours including the border; a rental car goes there only with our driver — a self-drive car stays in Georgia. Azerbaijan is not an option by road — land borders there remain closed to passengers, and since 26.05.2026 only passenger rail has resumed.
