The entry tier is the Mercedes-Benz GL 350 CDI BlueTEC and the Porsche Cayenne, both at $120; the Land Rover Discovery 3.0 Diesel, the Range Rover Velar 2.0 Diesel and the Volkswagen Touareg follow at $140, then the Range Rover Sport 3.0 Diesel Autobiography Sport and the Range Rover Vogue 4.4 Diesel Autobiography at $150, with the Defender 110 2.0 Diesel topping the range at $190. Power runs from 180 hp in the Velar to 367 hp in the GL.

Is a diesel Land Rover Defender or Range Rover worth the extra

The Defender 110 2.0 Diesel at $190 per day and the Range Rover Vogue 4.4 Diesel at $150 per day are the top of our diesel range. The Defender carries a 2.0 L engine and 200 hp, the Vogue a 4.4 L unit with 339 hp, and both are all-wheel drive with automatic gearboxes. The Velar 2.0 Diesel at $140 and the Touareg at $140 sit one step down, at 180 hp and 286 hp.

A note on the minivan

• What every car shares: diesel fuel, an automatic transmission and delivery to any address in the city, agreed with a manager when you book.

Rear-wheel drive on the Marco Polo is the one thing to weigh up before a winter mountain booking — for a snowy pass, the all-wheel-drive GL at the same seat count costs $70 a day less.

Prices, rates and what the rental includes

Our diesel rates run from $120 to $190 per day, and the number you see is the number you pay for the car itself. Weekly bookings start at $720, monthly at $2,520. Everything else — the deposit, the excess, any delivery fee — is set out in the rental agreement, so read it before you sign.

Diesel car hire in Tbilisi starts at $120 per day, with weekly rates from $720 and monthly rates from $2,520. Eight of the nine diesel cars sit in the SUV and 4x4 class and begin at $120; the single minivan, a Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo 250 d 2.1 Diesel, is $190 per day. The weekly figure is the daily rate multiplied by six, and the monthly figure is the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one, so a long booking costs far less per day than a short one. A month in the $120 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 CDI BlueTEC comes to $2,520 — that is 21 charged days for a full month of driving.

What the price covers, by class

The table shows the two classes on this page and nothing else — our diesel line has no sedans or hatchbacks. The eight SUVs and 4x4s cover the $120, $140, $150 and $190 tiers; the minivan stands alone at $190. Weekly and monthly figures follow the same multipliers across every model. If your trip is built around the mountain roads to Kazbegi or Gudauri, the all-wheel-drive SUVs are the ones to price first.

What is included and what is agreed when booking

• Full-to-full fuel: the car comes clean with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank; otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.
• Delivery: we bring the car to any address in Tbilisi and to Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) and Kutaisi International Airport (KUT).
• Booking details: the delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
• Deposit and excess: the deposit, the insurance excess and any delivery fee are set out in the rental agreement, not quoted in advance.
• One fuel option only: no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty arrangement is offered on this site.
• Outside the city: delivery beyond Tbilisi and the two airports is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.

Mind the full-to-full rule: a diesel tank returned half empty costs more than the fuel itself once the service fee is added.

Diesel car rental in Tbilisi 4x4 and mountain roads

Do you need a 4x4 for the mountain routes

All eight SUVs and 4x4s in our diesel fleet have all-wheel drive, which is what the Kazbegi and Gudauri roads ask for. The Georgian Military Road (S3) runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, passing Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, and its highest point is the Jvari Pass at 2379 m. The resort base at Gudauri sits at 1,989 m, with ski lifts reaching 3,276 m, and the drive from the city usually takes 2–2.5 hours. Upper sections of the S3 see landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is high; a 23 km bypass with a 9 km tunnel has been under construction since 2021.

A 7-seat diesel car for a family trip

Two diesel cars in our fleet seat 7 — the Mercedes-Benz GL 350 CDI BlueTEC at $120 per day and the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo 250 d 2.1 Diesel at $190 per day. The GL 350 CDI BlueTEC pairs its 7 seats with a 367 hp engine and all-wheel drive; the Marco Polo 250 d runs a 2.1 L, 190 hp unit with rear-wheel drive. Both are automatics, and both make sense if you are travelling as a group of five or more and want one car instead of two. For Gudauri between December and mid-April, take the GL: winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in zones designated by the government chains on at least the two front wheels may be required in particular weather.

Matching the car to the road

• Mtskheta, Ananuri and Pasanauri: 26 km and 66 km from the city on the same S3, with Pasanauri further up — any diesel car in the fleet covers these comfortably.
• Borjomi and Bakuriani: 160 km and 184 km; the Bakuriani climb is where all-wheel drive starts to earn its place in winter.

The Rikoti Pass (E60) on the east–west route is free to use, opened on 29.12.2025, and runs 52 km with 51 tunnels, 97 bridges and four lanes — no vignette or transponder is needed anywhere on Georgia's international and domestic roads. Fuel is the real cost of a mountain trip, and diesel at 4.76 lari per litre is around 17% more expensive than petrol, so plan your fill-ups before the climb rather than on it.

What diesel costs at the pump

Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, per the Roads Department statement of 10.06.2026, and no change is planned; there are no vignettes and no transponders to buy. The Rikoti pass on the east–west E60 opened on 29.12.2025 — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes — and it too is free. For a seven-day loop out of the capital, tolls add nothing to the budget.

Range on the routes travellers actually drive

• Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): 153 km, continuing past Gudauri toward the Russian border; the Georgian Military Road runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the frontier.

Picking the car up and driving away

Hand-over is arranged at the address you agreed, and the deposit and the insurance excess are set out in the rental agreement. Traffic in Georgia drives on the right, and the rules of the road are set out in the section below — worth knowing before your first run out of the city.

A foreign driving licence is valid in Georgia for up to one year from the date you enter the country, and no exchange is required.

What to bring and what the law recognises

• Driving licence: a current licence in Latin or Cyrillic script.
• International Driving Permit: required when your licence uses a script outside those two alphabets.
• Deposit: agreed in advance, and set out in the rental agreement rather than quoted here.
• Age and driving experience: agreed when booking, not fixed by this page.

Speed, seat belts and phone use

Speed limits in built-up areas are 60 km/h, and 20 km/h in residential zones. Outside built-up areas a category B car may do 90 km/h, on a motorway 110 km/h, and with a light trailer 80 km/h. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory under the law. A phone may only be used with a hands-free kit or speakerphone, with both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 must travel in the rear in a child seat or restraint matched to their height and weight, though a passenger aged 16 or over may hold the child on their lap in the back. Children under 6 may not be left alone in a parked car.

Alcohol, fines and winter tyres

The alcohol limit is 0.3 ‰, or 0.03%. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, with chains on at least two front wheels in government-defined zones under particular weather conditions.

Winter changes what a diesel car is for. From 1 December to 1 March winter tyres are compulsory in Georgia, and on mountain routes they stop being a formality.

Winter tyres, chains and what the law requires

• Winter tyres: compulsory from 1 December to 1 March; the requirement applies to the car, so check the tread before you leave the city.
• Chains: in zones designated by the government, under specific weather conditions, chains are required on at least two front wheels.
• Jvari Pass: the Georgian Military Road tops out at 2379 m, where snow and landslides close sections; carry chains even if the lower road is clear.
• Gudauri: the resort sits at 2200 m by the Jvari Pass, and the ski season runs from early December to mid-April.
• Timing: the drive to Gudauri normally takes 2–2.5 hours from the capital; in heavy snow allow longer and start in daylight.

Which diesel cars handle a Georgian winter

All eight SUVs and 4x4s in our diesel fleet are all-wheel drive with automatic transmission, which is the combination the Gudauri road rewards. The Mercedes-Benz GL 350 CDI BlueTEC at $120 per day is the cheaper way to get seven seats and all-wheel drive in one car.

Diesel in the cold, and what it costs

Diesel in Georgia costs 4.76 lari per litre as of 21.09.2026, about 17% more than petrol at 4.06 lari. Fuel is not the only running cost: parking in the capital runs from 1 lari per hour with the first 15 minutes free, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or the terminals on the street.

Before you set off towards the mountains

Snow on the upper sections of the Georgian Military Road is the reason we ask about your route when the booking is agreed with a manager. Chains, winter tyres and an all-wheel-drive diesel cover the mechanical side; daylight, a full tank and a check of the pass conditions cover the rest.
