Driving rules worth knowing before you pull away

Spain drives on the right and every car in our fleet is left-hand drive. Speed limits are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on an ordinary carretera, 50 km/h on city streets with two or more lanes each way and 30 km/h where there is one lane each way. The alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years. A phone held in the hand is 200 EUR and 6 points; a seatbelt or child-seat offence is 200 EUR and 4 points. Child seats are required for anyone under 135 cm tall. Fines carry a 50% discount if paid within 20 calendar days.

One practical note: the ZBE València low-emission zone covers 27.8 km² inside Ronda Nord, the avenidas de Tarongers and Serradora and Bulevard Sud, and from 01.12.2025 to 31.12.2026 it restricts only category A cars without a DGT sticker that are registered outside the province of Valencia.
