Speed limits are the ones to watch: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on a conventional carretera, 50 km/h on city streets with two or more lanes in one direction, 30 km/h where there is one lane each way, and 20 km/h on a single-platform street where road and pavement are level. Exceeding the limit by more than 60 km/h in town or 80 km/h outside it turns an administrative fine into a criminal offence, not a ticket.

The alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath for most drivers and 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals. Above 0.60 mg/l it is a criminal matter. Holding a phone while driving costs 200 EUR and six points; a belt or child-seat offence is 200 EUR and four points. Child restraints are required for anyone below 135 cm.

The low-emission zone, ZBE València, covers 27.8 km² inside Ronda Nord, the avenidas de Tarongers and Serradora and Bulevard Sud, and runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The staged rollout starts with cars without a DGT sticker registered outside the province of Valencia, then outside the city, then all category A vehicles. Category A means petrol registered before 2001 and diesel before 2006. Cars carrying Spanish plates and a DGT sticker — B, C, ECO or 0 — fall outside these restrictions, since only category A is targeted.

• Parking zones: the blue zone in Ciutat Vella, L'Eixample and Extramurs costs €1.00 for 60 minutes, capped at two hours; the orange zone charges €2.10 for the same hour.

After the late-August 2026 fire, the Devesa car parks on Avenida Gola del Pujol were closed, so check access before you go.

• AP-7 north and south: free of péage since 01.01.2020, when 373.8 km of the Autopista del Mediterráneo between Salou and Alicante came out of concession — Dénia, Calp, Benidorm and Peñíscola are all reachable without a toll.
• Sagunto and the V-21: the access road into the city and the V-30 urban ring are limited to 80 km/h and carry fixed radars.

Fuel, Parking and the ZBE Before You Set Off

Parking in the Zona azul centro y ensanches (Ciutat Vella, L'Eixample, Extramurs) runs €1.00 for 60 minutes and €1.70 for 120, and the maximum stay is two hours, so a Porsche left on the street all afternoon is not an option.
