Automatic and hybrid cars sit in the same Economy band as manual petrol ones — Toyota Yaris is hybrid and automatic for ₺1,900 — so the gearbox need not push you into a higher class.

Seats, fuel and drive — matching the car to your group

Seat counts across the fleet are 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9, with diesel, gasoline, hybrid and electric engines and front-wheel, rear-wheel or 4x4 drive. Minivans and Luxury cover the seven-to-nine-seat end, while Commercial vans trade passenger seats for load space. Fuel choice matters on distance: diesel models such as Peugeot 301 and Fiat Egea Sedan stretch further per tank on long intercity runs, while the hybrid Toyota Yaris and Toyota Corolla suit stop-start traffic. A five-seat car with luggage for five is a four-seat car in practice — count bags, not people, when you pick the class. In our bookings, groups of four travelling for a week land on Comfort or SUV far more often than on Economy, simply because of boot space.

Daily rates by class

The cheapest cars in the fleet are the Dacia Sandero, the Fiat Egea Hatchback and the Hyundai i10 at ₺1,600 a day, while the top of the range reaches ₺15,000. Between those two figures sit 87 cars in eight classes, so there is usually a vehicle in the band you have in mind. Economy covers hatchbacks and sedans with 4–5 seats, Minivans carry 8–9, and the fuel and transmission mix runs from manual diesel to automatic hybrid — worth checking against how many people and bags actually travel.

Weekly and monthly rates

• Weekly: from ₺9,600 — the daily rate multiplied by six, not by seven.
• Monthly: from ₺33,600 — the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one.
• Per-day effect: a longer booking lowers the cost of each day, which is why a month of Economy costs less per day than a single weekend.
• Class still decides: the multipliers apply across the fleet, so a weekly SUV starts higher than a weekly Economy car.
• What is fixed: deposit, mileage and the scope of cover beyond the compulsory traffic insurance are set out in the rental agreement.

In our experience the weekly rate is the one travellers underuse: people book five or six separate days at the daily price when a seven-day booking at daily x 6 often costs about the same. If your plans stretch past five days, ask the manager to quote both ways before you confirm — the answer is not always obvious once class and delivery slot are fixed.

What changes the total

The daily rate is only part of the bill. HGS tolls for the bridges and motorway gates are charged separately from the rental, with the mechanics described on the HGS page. Fuel is yours, and so is any unpaid passage — an unauthorized toll passage settled late can be penalised at four times the toll, so make sure crossings are settled on time, as set out in the rental agreement, rather than waiting for the end of the trip.

Class, dates and delivery point are agreed with a manager at booking, and the rate for your combination is confirmed then. If a leg of your route is still undecided, say so before the booking is fixed rather than after the car is in your hands.

Documents and requirements for car rental in Turkey

The paper side of hiring a car here is short: a passport, an entry stamp, your home driving licence and a credit card in the main driver's name. Everything else is agreed with the manager before the vehicle is delivered.

An Economy hatchback and a Luxury saloon are not held to the same threshold: the higher the class, the longer the licence history the manager will ask about. In our practice, the mismatch that costs people time is a young driver booking a Premium or Luxury car and only then discovering the class threshold.

Insurance and the security hold

Compulsory third-party insurance covers every registered vehicle in Turkey by law, so the car you receive on this page carries it. What sits beyond that compulsory cover — the deposit amount, the excess, any additional protection — is set out in the rental agreement rather than quoted over the phone. A credit card in the main driver's name is required for the security hold; the amount is confirmed with the manager at booking. Read those lines before the car arrives, because the hold is placed against your card, not against the booking in general.

If you land in Istanbul

Both airports here sit on opposite sides of the city, and the same document set applies whichever one you arrive at. Return follows the same logic in reverse: you agree the place and time with the manager before the last day, and the car goes back there. Fuel level, cleanliness and any damage found on return are handled against the agreement, so read that clause before you sign rather than on the morning you fly.

Leave a realistic buffer on the final day. Traffic on the bridge crossings and in the tunnel approaches can turn a twenty-minute run into an hour, and a missed return slot is a conversation you would rather have had earlier.

Rules of the road for car rental in Turkey, tolls and insurance

Every registered vehicle here carries the compulsory third-party insurance required by law, so the cover travels with the car rather than with you. What sits above that baseline is set out in the rental agreement — read it before you drive off, not after a scrape in a car park.

Motorways and the two Bosphorus bridges are paid through HGS, the electronic toll system. HGS reads the car's plate, so you do not stop at a booth or buy a ticket. Current tariffs: Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge ₺110, Eurasia Tunnel ₺280 by day and ₺140 at night, Osmangazi Bridge ₺1,170. Miss a payment and the passage is logged as an unauthorized toll passage — an unpaid crossing that can be penalised at four times the toll if it is not settled in time. If your route crosses water or heads for Bursa, tell the manager when booking so the HGS side is arranged with the car.

Rules that catch visitors out:

• Drive on the right: traffic runs on the right-hand side, and Istanbul plates begin with 34.
• Speed and police checks: limits are posted along the road, so follow the signs rather than a figure remembered from home.
• Weekend traffic: Saturday and Sunday are the weekend, and the bridges carry steady flows in both directions on those days.
• Winter: the climate is maritime, humid and mild, and it does snow in winter — check the tyres and the conditions before a long winter drive.
• Off-road: driving off paved roads is prohibited by the rental agreement, so a 4x4 is for grip and ground clearance on real roads, not for fields.

Plan tolls into the trip budget rather than discovering them at the end: a single Osmangazi crossing at ₺1,170 costs most of a day of an Economy car at ₺1,600, so a Bursa or Uludağ run is a toll decision as much as a fuel one.

• Long motorway days: a Comfort sedan such as Toyota Corolla or Škoda Octavia at ₺2,200–₺2,500, where the extra litre and 140–150 hp keep overtaking calm.
• Rough shoulders and gravel access roads: Dacia Duster 4x4 at ₺2,200 with 1.5 L diesel and 115 hp, the most affordable of the five 4x4 cars in the line-up.
• Five people plus luggage: a Minivan from ₺5,000, or a 7-seat option — a 5-seat car with five adults and five bags is a 4-seat car in practice.
