Phuket Bicycle Hire: Day Rates, Bike Types and Delivery
Bicycle rental in Phuket starts at ฿490 a day for a mountain bike, or ฿390 a day on a weekly hire, with a three-day minimum. Carbon road bikes cost ฿1,200–1,600 a day, and a 16-inch children's bike ฿390. Below: the models, weekly sums, delivery, documents, family options and the alternatives.
Which bikes the island rents out
The pedal-cycle market on the island is small and specialised. It comes down to three kinds of bicycle, each with its own price level and its own way of reaching you.
Mountain bikes: Talon 2 and Marlin 7
The entry point is a mountain bike: the Giant Talon 2 or the Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3, both at ฿490 a day and ฿390 a day when you keep one for a week. They are factory-stock machines, delivered with a helmet, lights, a lock, a kickstand and a bell, so nothing has to be bought before the first ride. Two models at one price means the choice between them is about fit and feel, not budget. In my view, the useful thing to send when booking is each rider's height, because frame sizes are not quoted next to the prices.
Carbon road bikes: two TCR Advanced KOM versions
For riders who want distance and speed, the market offers carbon road machines. The Giant TCR Advanced 2 KOM with a Shimano 105 groupset starts from ฿1,200 a day; the TCR Advanced 1 KOM with 105 Di2, the electronic version of the same groupset, starts from ฿1,600. Road machines for hire use Shimano 105 and Ultegra components, and Trek road frames with 105 and disc brakes are also for hire, with weekly and monthly discounts but no day price given. The ฿400 gap between the two Giants buys electronic shifting and nothing else that is stated, so riders happy with mechanical gears lose little by taking the cheaper one.
A 16-inch bicycle for younger riders
Children are not left out. A 16-inch kids' bicycle made for ages 4 to 6 costs ฿390 a day, or ฿350 a day on a weekly hire, and there are bicycles for children over 3 years old. For younger children there are child seats, and a basket can be added as well. Book these together with the adult hire in one request and ask for everything on the same delivery, so the family is set up in one handover.
Day rates, weekly rates and the minimum hire
Prices on the island are quoted per bicycle per day, in baht, and their structure rewards longer hires. Three numbers matter: the day rate, the weekly rate and the minimum.
Market prices by model
| Model | Type | Per day | Per day on a weekly hire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant Talon 2 | Mountain bike | ฿490 | ฿390 |
| Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 | Mountain bike | ฿490 | ฿390 |
| 16-inch kids' bicycle, ages 4–6 | Children's bicycle | ฿390 | ฿350 |
| Giant TCR Advanced 2 KOM, 105 | Carbon road bike | from ฿1,200 | discount on request |
| Giant TCR Advanced 1 KOM, 105 Di2 | Carbon road bike | from ฿1,600 | discount on request |
What a week costs
A mountain bike for seven days at the weekly rate comes to ฿2,730, against ฿3,430 at the full rate — ฿700 less, or about a fifth off. For the kids' model the saving is smaller: ฿2,450 for the week instead of ฿2,730, which is ฿280 or roughly a tenth. So the weekly discount is worth twice as much in relative terms on an adult mountain bike as on a child's bicycle. Planning a stay of six days? Check whether the weekly rate applies anyway, because six days at ฿490 is ฿2,940, already more than seven days at ฿390. For bike rental in Phuket that lasts a week or longer, the weekly rate is the number to compare, and a fortnight at ฿390 a day comes to ฿5,460. Road machines carry significant weekly and monthly discounts too, but the percentage is not given, so get the figure in writing before committing to a longer road hire.
The three-day minimum
Mountain-bike prices include tax, service fees and equipment for a minimum rental of three days, which puts the smallest normal hire at ฿1,470. Shorter rentals are possible, but additional fees apply and their size is not stated up front. That changes the maths for a one-day plan: a single day will cost more than ฿490, by an amount you only learn when you ask. If you only want one ride, request the exact one-day total before booking. If you are on the island for three days or more, take the full block and keep the bicycle between rides instead of hiring twice.
Mountain bike or carbon road bike
The two adult formats differ in more than price. They reach you differently, they come with different kit, and they suit different riders.
Two formats side by side
| Point | Mountain bike | Carbon road bike |
|---|---|---|
| Price per day | ฿490 | from ฿1,200 to ฿1,600 |
| Longer hires | ฿390 a day weekly | weekly and monthly discounts, figure on request |
| Minimum | 3 days; shorter costs extra | rental day counted over 24 hours |
| How you get it | delivered to your hotel or villa | collected from a shop on Lagoon Road, Choeng Thale |
| Included kit | helmet, lights, lock, kickstand, bell | helmet, drinking bottle, lock, pedals |
| Documents | picture of your passport and a signed contract | copy of your passport or legal ID |
| Insurance | optional | optional, covers damage to the bicycle |
When the road bike is worth 2.45 times more
At ฿1,200 a day, the cheaper carbon model costs 2.45 times as much as a mountain bike; the Di2 version at ฿1,600 is 3.27 times as much. That premium makes sense for one kind of rider: someone who came to train, plans long rides on tarmac and would otherwise have brought their own machine. Road bike rental in Phuket is priced for that rider, and the kit list reflects it — pedals and a bottle are supplied, while lights and a kickstand are not on the list. Bring your own shoes and confirm which pedal system is fitted before collection. For three days the TCR Advanced 2 comes to ฿3,600 and the Di2 version to ฿4,800 at day rates, so get the multi-day price before settling on either.
When the mountain bike is the better pick
For everyone else, the mountain bike is the sensible default. It costs ฿490 a day, arrives at the door ready to ride, and has a kickstand and a bell for short stops in town. Mountain bike rental here is built around holiday use rather than training: the bicycle stays with you between rides and is collected from the same address at the end. Not sure how much you will ride? Take the Talon or the Marlin for the first block of days, and switch to a road machine for a single longer outing only if the itch appears.
Delivery to the door or pickup at the shop
How the bicycle reaches you depends on the format, and the timing rules can quietly add a fee or cost a day.
The free morning delivery window
Mountain and kids' bicycles are delivered and picked up anywhere in Phuket, to a hotel or a villa. Delivery inside the standard window from 6 am to noon is complimentary; a specific time outside that window costs extra. Book at least 24 hours in advance, because the delivery date is chosen when you book. Two practical consequences follow. An evening arrival on the island cannot be met the same night without a surcharge, so plan the first ride for the next morning. And if you leave on an afternoon flight, set the pickup inside the same morning window to keep it free.
Shop hours and the Sunday gap
Carbon road machines are not delivered. They are collected from and returned to a shop on Lagoon Road in Choeng Thale, open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 19:00, and closed on Sunday. Rentals cannot be picked up or returned on Sundays. Note the lunchtime hour as well: arriving at 12:15 means waiting until 13:00. Getting to the shop and back is your own job, which matters if you are staying on the far side of the island.
How a 24-hour rental day is counted
Road-hire days are counted on a 24-hour clock, from the hour you collect the frame. Picked up on Tuesday at 10:00, a one-day hire is due back on Wednesday at 10:00. The closed Sunday makes weekends awkward: a one-day hire collected on Saturday morning would be due on Sunday, when nothing can be returned. Either collect on Friday and return on Saturday, or keep it until Monday and confirm in advance how the extra day is charged. For a weekend ride, a Friday-to-Monday booking avoids the Sunday problem altogether.
Kit, documents, deposit and insurance
The paperwork is light, but each format asks for slightly different things. Knowing them in advance saves a delay at the handover.
What comes with the bicycle
- Helmet: included free with both mountain and road hires.
- Lock: supplied at no extra cost with both formats.
- Lights, kickstand and bell: fitted to the delivered mountain bikes, not specified for road machines.
- Drinking bottle and pedals: supplied with road machines.
- Extras: a child seat or a basket can be added to a delivered hire when you book.
- Tip: if you plan to ride a road machine after dark, bring your own lights, since none are specified for that format.
Passport, contract and payment
For a delivered mountain bike, a picture of your passport is required and a contract is signed when the bicycle is delivered. After booking, availability is confirmed and a payment link for the deposit follows; the rest is paid on delivery, in Thai baht only. Have baht ready before the delivery arrives, since no other currency is accepted. For a road machine, a copy of your passport or another legal ID is required at collection. Keep a photo of the passport page on your phone: it covers both cases and spares you from handing over the original.
Optional damage cover
Insurance is offered on both formats and is optional; on road machines it covers damage to the bicycle. What it costs is not given with the day rates, so get the price together with the hire. On a ฿490 mountain bike the decision is a matter of comfort. On a carbon frame at ฿1,200–1,600 a day, damage cover deserves a closer look, since the day rate alone is 2.45 to 3.27 times that of a mountain bike. Read what the cover excludes, especially theft, before you sign.
Families, e-bikes, scooters and guided rides
A plain bicycle is not always the right tool. Children, longer distances and riders who want a route planned for them each point to a different option.
Riding with children
A family of two adults and a child aged 4 to 6 can be set up for a week for ฿7,910: two mountain bikes at ฿2,730 each and a 16-inch bicycle at ฿2,450. Children over 3 can ride on their own; younger ones travel in a child seat on a parent's frame. Request the seat at booking, so it arrives fitted on the same morning delivery. A child on a 16-inch wheel sets the pace of the whole group, so plan family rides by the distance the child can manage, not by what the adults could do.
When an e-bike or a scooter fits better
| Option | Price per day | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain bike | ฿490, or ฿390 weekly | three-day minimum, delivered |
| Budget e-bike | from ฿400 | motor assistance for less than a mountain bike |
| Electric mountain bike or carbon e-road bike | ฿1,500–2,000 | allowed only within Phuket island |
| Scooter | from ฿200 | a motorised option at less than half the bicycle price |
The comparison is less obvious than it looks. A scooter starts at less than half the day rate of a mountain bike, and a budget e-bike starts below it too. A plain bicycle is the choice when the ride itself is the point, not the cheapest way from A to B. If what you mainly need is transport between beach, hotel and shops, the e-bike and scooter pages cover those options in detail.
A guided ride instead of a rental
Riders who would rather not plan a route can book a guided tour instead. Full- and half-day rides go out with a private cycling guide, up to 120 km on a road bike or 100 km on an e-bike. Half-day island tours, such as a coast-to-coast ride or a ride to the White Temple, Wat Kanan, cost ฿1,900–2,400 per tour, and a longer Phuket to Phang Nga ride costs ฿15,000–25,000. Compared with a ฿1,200 road machine for the day, a half-day tour costs ฿700–1,200 more, and that difference pays for a guide and a planned route. Check what the tour price covers before comparing the two directly.
Checklist before you ride off
Most problems with a cycle hire come from a detail nobody asked about. Seven points, settled when you book, cover nearly all of them.
Seven things to settle when booking
- Size: give each rider's height, since frame sizes are not quoted with the prices.
- Length of hire: three days or more for a mountain bike; get the one-day total if you need less.
- Weekly rate: for six days or more, check whether ฿390 a day applies instead of ฿490.
- Delivery time: keep delivery and pickup between 6 am and noon to avoid the surcharge.
- Road-hire days: count the 24-hour clock and avoid a return that falls on a Sunday.
- Documents and money: passport photo on your phone, deposit paid by link, the balance ready in baht.
- Cover: ask the price of insurance and what it excludes, especially on a carbon frame.
