Toyota Yaris for a week at ฿1,000 a day. Handed over at Samui airport, we stayed in Chaweng and drove round the island. A clean car and a friendly team.

Suzuki Swift for five days at ฿750 a day, ฿3,750 in total. Easy to park in Fisherman's Village in Bophut on the Friday walking street night. Great value.

Toyota Fortuner for four days at ฿2,200 a day. The steep roads up to the Lamai viewpoint and the Secret Buddha Garden were no problem. A solid, clean car.

Nissan Almera at ฿850 a day for three days, ฿2,550 total. A good little car, but it struggled a bit on the steep road to Na Muang waterfall with four of us. The staff had warned me, to be fair.

Honda HR-V for a week at ฿1,850 a day. We stayed in Maenam and drove to the market in Nathon and to the Big Buddha. Comfortable, with excellent air conditioning.

Jeep Wrangler for three days at ฿4,000 a day, ฿12,000 in total. Great fun on the coast road around Lamai and Taling Ngam. The handover was quick and friendly.

Toyota Innova for our group of six at ฿1,800 a day. Round the island in one day with stops at Na Muang and Lamai. Spacious and clean.

Isuzu D-Max at ฿1,300 a day for five days. Good for the dirt road to our villa in Taling Ngam, but it came with a scratched windscreen. It was noted at the handover, so there was no problem at the return.

Tesla Model 3 for four days at ฿1,500 a day, ฿6,000 in total. Charged at our resort in Choeng Mon. Smooth and quiet, and the team explained the charging well.

Mazda 2 for ten days at ฿900 a day. We drove every road on the island, from Chaweng to Lipa Noi. Never a problem, and very economical.

Toyota Corolla Cross for five days at ฿1,700 a day, ฿8,500 in total. We stayed near Bophut and visited the Big Buddha and Choeng Mon beach. A great car for the island.

Ford Everest at ฿1,800 a day for a week. An excellent car, but the handover at Lipa Noi pier was later than planned because the ferry arrived early. The staff were apologetic.

BYD Dolphin for five days at ฿850 a day, ฿4,250 total. Cheap to run around Chaweng and Lamai, and the handover explained the charging clearly.

Honda Civic for three days at ฿1,000 a day, ฿3,000 in total. A comfortable ride round the island and easy to park at Lamai beach.

Mitsubishi Xpander for our family at ฿1,700 a day. Seven seats for the trip to the Secret Buddha Garden and the Na Muang waterfalls. Clean and well maintained.

BMW Z4 for two days at ฿10,000 a day. The coast road from Chaweng to Choeng Mon with the roof down at sunset. Unforgettable, and in perfect condition.

Honda Jazz at ฿900 a day for four days, ฿3,600 in total. A good small car, but the Bluetooth would not pair with my phone. A minor thing, everything else in Maenam was fine.

Toyota Hilux Revo for a week at ฿1,800 a day. Perfect for surfboards and the roads to Taling Ngam. An honest, relaxed team.

Toyota Vios for five days at ฿950 a day, ฿4,750 in total. Picked up at Samui airport and stayed in Bophut. Easy and good value.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class for three days at ฿3,500 a day. An anniversary trip: we drove round the island and over to Nathon. A beautifully clean car.
