Costa Brava is a region, not a single town, and the resorts sit far apart: GRO to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km, to Palafrugell 54.4 km, to Roses 75.2 km. A traveller landing at GRO and staying near L'Escala faces a transfer problem that a car solves directly. Driving is on the right, all our cars are left-hand drive, and the AP-7 corridor from Barcelona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021 — the C-32 and C-33 went the same way. If your stay straddles two resorts, tell the manager at booking.

Driving a rental car around the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is a long stretch of coast, not a single resort, so the car is what turns a week in one town into a week of beaches, capes and medieval villages.

The motorway spine and what it costs

The AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera covers the whole corridor from the Catalan capital up to the French border and has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so the main north-south run along the coast costs nothing. The C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls), which is the route from the Catalan capital towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar, also went free when the barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021, and the C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló has been free since 01.09.2021. Paid motorways of the Generalitat do still exist — the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at 8.42 € and Cubelles at 5.03 €, category 2) — but none of them sits on a Costa Brava route. Catalonia is discussing bringing back charges for fast roads, either a vignette or pay-per-use, but no decision has been taken.

Fuel, speed and the local limits

Petrol 95 E5 in the province of Girona averages 1.94 €/l, with a median of 1.979, a low of 1.718 and a high of 2.122 across 250 filling stations; along the coast the average sits at 1.956 €/l across 58 stations. Diesel (Gasóleo A) averages 1.922 €/l in the province and 1.932 €/l on the coast, and Petrol 98 E5 runs to 2.106 €/l and 2.131 €/l respectively. Speed limits are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — and 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. Fill up away from the seafront where you can — the coastal average is only marginally higher, but the spread between the cheapest and dearest station in the province is over 40 cents a litre.

What to plan before you set off

• ZBE Girona: the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has operated since 15.09.2025, 7–20 h Monday to Friday on working days, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell.
• Foreign plates: cars without a DGT environmental badge and not registered in Girona are restricted, with 24 days a year allowed inside the zone during restricted hours without a permit; foreign-registered vehicles can get a temporary authorisation if they meet the technical and environmental requirements.
• Rental cars: the Spanish rental fleet carries the DGT badge, so a car from us faces no restriction in the zone.
• Cameras: enforcement reads number plates automatically — you do not need to display a sticker.
• Cap de Creus access: the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to cars on set days in spring and June and daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September, so check the calendar before driving out to the lighthouse.

Licence rules for EU and non-EU drivers

• EU/EEA licences: valid in Spain exactly as issued, for as long as they remain in force, with no international permit required.
• Non-EU licences: the DGT recommends an International Driving Permit before the trip; carry it together with your passport and your national licence.
• Non-Latin script licences: a licence in Cyrillic, Arabic or character-based script is accepted only with an official translation into Spanish, or if it follows Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.
• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: a supplementary document, valid one year, shown only alongside the passport and the national licence — never on its own.
• Residency: six months after you take up ordinary residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid and must be exchanged.

For a one-week holiday along the coast, an EU licence or an IDP-plus-national-licence pair covers the whole trip — the six-month rule only catches drivers who have moved to Spain, not visitors.

Insurance that is always included, and what you add on top

Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is statutory and comes with every booking: it covers injury and property damage to third parties, with limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. It does not cover the car itself or the driver.

What to check before you drive away

• Inspection record: every scratch and dent must be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before departure, signed by both sides, with a copy kept by the driver.
• Fuel policy: our cars are handed over with a full tank and must come back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno in Spanish.
• Deposit: the card accepted for it is agreed when booking; the amount is confirmed before the agreement is signed.
• Substitution: if the booked model is unavailable, you may ask for another car at no extra cost; a lower class means a lower price.
• Fines: parking and toll offences fall on the owner or the renter of the vehicle; moving offences, alcohol and drugs fall on whoever was driving.
• ZBE de Girona: the low-emission zone runs 7–20, Monday to Friday on working days, and Spanish rental cars carry the DGT environmental badge, so no restriction applies.

One practical point worth knowing: the DGT recommends getting an IDP before the trip, so drivers from outside the EU should arrange it at home.

What to weigh before choosing a direction

The Cap de Creus road is the one place where a spontaneous plan can fail. Cars are barred 9:30–19:00 on 28–31 March and individual days in April and May, 9:30–21:30 on named dates in June and every day from July to 13 September. If the headland is the point of the trip, fix that day first and let everything else move around it.

Our advice is to pair one inland day with one coastal day rather than stacking two headland runs back to back.

Fuel and tolls on the longer runs

Tolls are the good news. The AP-7 corridor between the city of Barcelona, Girona and the border has been free since 01.09.2021, the C-32 Maresme and the C-33 out of Barcelona went the same way, and the routes you will actually drive here carry no barrier at all.

A car returned with a full tank avoids any refuelling charge.
