Do I pay the London Congestion Charge in an SUV?

The Congestion Charge is £18 per day if paid on the day of travel or in advance, or £21 if paid by midnight on the third day after the trip. It applies 07:00–18:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00–18:00 on weekends and bank holidays.

SUV car rental in London

Published Updated

A week of motorway hops, school runs and weekend escapes is easier when the car fits the plan — and our SUV car rental in London puts 10 SUVs at your disposal, from £34 a day. We deliver the car to any address in the city and to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City and Southend airports, with the exact address, date and time agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.

What SUV car rental in London includes with Rent-Trip

SUV car rental in London with Rent-Trip is built around one idea: the car comes to you. We deliver the SUV to any address in the city, hand over the keys, and the rest of the trip is yours. Every booking is confirmed with a manager first, so the address, the date and the time are fixed before anything moves.

Delivered to your address, agreed with a manager

We deliver the SUV to any address in the city, and the address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. That covers homes, hotels and offices, plus Heathrow Airport (LHR), Gatwick Airport (LGW), Stansted Airport (STN), Luton Airport (LTN), City Airport (LCY) and Southend Airport (SEN). Our pages also cover St Pancras & King's Cross, Euston, Paddington, Victoria, Waterloo, Canary Wharf, Wembley, ExCeL London and Mayfair — all inside the delivery area. Delivery outside these places is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site, so ask the manager before you count on it. In our practice the hand-over slot matters more than the address: a 07:00 drop at a terminal and a 19:00 drop at a hotel are two different bookings, and both need agreeing in advance.

Full tank out, full tank back

The car comes clean with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank. That is the full-to-full rule, and it is the only fuel option we offer — no pre-paid tank, no full-to-empty arrangement. If the tank comes back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Check the gauge at hand-over, so the figure at return is not a matter of memory. On a hybrid like the Toyota RAV4 or the Kia Sorento the petrol engine does most of the long-distance work, so the tank you collect is the tank you will be watching.

  • Delivery address: any address in the city plus the six airports, agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
  • Timing: date and time confirmed in the same conversation, not left open until the day.
  • Fuel: full tank at hand-over, full tank at return, missing fuel and a service fee per the rental agreement.
  • Condition: the car is supplied clean, and the return condition is set out in the rental agreement.
  • Outside the area: arranged case by case and never promised on the site.

What the rental agreement covers — deposit, insurance excess, delivery fees and any discount — is set out there rather than in a headline, and the minimum age and the cards accepted are agreed when booking.

The SUV fleet for SUV car rental in London

Our SUV car rental in London page holds 10 SUVs across 9 brands, with 5 and 7 seats, petrol and hybrid engines, and both automatic and manual gearboxes. Every car is delivered to your address, and the model you pick is confirmed with a manager before the booking is fixed.

Ten models side by side

Hyundai Tucson5PetrolAutomaticFront-wheel£34
Kia Sportage5PetrolManualFront-wheel£35

Peugeot 30085PetrolAutomaticFront-wheel£43
Ford Kuga5PetrolAutomaticFront-wheel£48
Kia Sorento7HybridAutomaticAll-wheel£49
Jeep Compass5HybridAutomaticFront-wheel£40

The Hyundai Tucson is the cheapest car on the page and the Kia Sorento the most expensive. In our experience the RAV4 is also the one that goes first when a customer wants all-wheel drive without paying the Sorento rate — if a specific model matters to you, say so when you book rather than leaving it to the day.

Five seats or seven

Nine of the ten SUVs seat five; the Kia Sorento is the only seven-seat SUV on this page. It pairs that third row with a hybrid drivetrain, all-wheel drive and 230 hp from a 1.6 L engine, at £49 a day. Groups of five travel comfortably in any of the five-seaters, while a sixth or seventh passenger needs the Sorento — and it is worth booking that one earlier, since a single car in the fleet cannot be in two places at once.

Hybrid, petrol, automatic or manual

  • Petrol, 7 cars: Tucson, Sportage, MG HS, Tiguan, Qashqai, 3008 and Kuga, all between 1.2 L and 1.6 L.
  • Hybrid, 3 cars: RAV4 (2.5 L, 218 hp), Sorento (1.6 L, 230 hp) and Jeep Compass (1.5 L, 130 hp).
  • Automatic, 8 cars: every model except the Kia Sportage and the Nissan Qashqai.
  • Manual, 2 cars: Sportage and Qashqai, both 1.6 L and 1.3 L front-wheel-drive petrol.
  • All-wheel drive, 2 cars: only the Toyota RAV4 and the Kia Sorento; the other eight are front-wheel drive.

Gearbox choice is a detail that is easy to leave to the last minute, and it is the one that narrows the list fastest: pick manual and you are down to two models, pick all-wheel drive and you are down to two different ones.

Picking the right SUV for SUV car rental in London

Most SUV car rental in London bookings come down to two questions: how much space you need and how much car you want to park. With 10 SUVs on this page, the choice is usually settled by seat count, drivetrain and footprint rather than by price alone.

City streets and tight parking

The Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008, both five-seat petrol cars, suit narrow central streets. The Qashqai runs a 1.3 L engine at 140 hp, the 3008 a 1.2 L unit at 130 hp — the two smallest powerplants on this page, which shows at the pump in stop-start traffic. Neither is all-wheel drive, and both use a front-wheel layout that keeps the turning circle tight in multi-storey car parks. In our experience, drivers taking delivery at St Pancras & King’s Cross and heading into the West End do better with one of these than with a seven-seat body. Check the height of the car park barrier before you book a taller model — roof clearance, not length, is what catches people out.

Longer trips out of the city

The Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sorento are the two all-wheel-drive SUVs, at £40 and £49 a day. The RAV4 pairs a 2.5 L hybrid at 218 hp with an automatic gearbox; the Sorento uses a 1.6 L hybrid at 230 hp and adds a third row. Both handle a wet motorway and a gravel farm track on the same afternoon, which is why they suit weekend runs to the Cotswolds or Bath. The RAV4 costs £40 a day, the same as the front-wheel-drive Volkswagen Tiguan and Jeep Compass, so all-wheel drive does not automatically mean paying more. If your trip is mostly motorway, a front-wheel-drive hybrid such as the Jeep Compass gives you the same hybrid economy without the extra drivetrain weight.

Matching the car to the job

  • Two adults, city only: the automatic Peugeot 3008 or the manual Nissan Qashqai — compact and easy to park.
  • Family of four with luggage: the Volkswagen Tiguan or Ford Kuga, both five-seat petrol automatics at 1.5 L.
  • Seven seats needed: the Kia Sorento, the only seven-seat SUV on this page, hybrid and all-wheel drive.
  • All-weather and out-of-town: the Toyota RAV4, all-wheel drive at £40 a day.
  • Long motorway days: the Jeep Compass hybrid, front-wheel drive, 1.5 L.

Nine of the ten SUVs seat five, so a seven-seat requirement narrows the list to one car — worth confirming before you fix a date. Tell the manager where you are going and how many people are travelling, and the model can be matched to the route rather than picked off a list.

How booking works for SUV car rental in London

Booking with Rent-Trip runs through a manager rather than an instant checkout: you send a request, Rent-Trip confirms the car, the delivery address, the date and the time, and only then is the booking fixed. Nothing is charged or promised before that conversation ends.

What the rental agreement covers

Deposit, insurance excess, delivery fees and any discounts are set out in the rental agreement, not quoted here — the figures depend on the model and the length of the hire, and they are confirmed with you before the booking is fixed. The same applies to the minimum rental age, the cards accepted and the territory limit: these are agreed when booking, so ask the manager directly instead of assuming a standard. In our practice the questions that come up most often are about the model and the delivery address — both are settled in the agreement and at booking, not left to the hand-over.

Weekly and monthly rates

Weekly rental is calculated as the daily rate multiplied by six and monthly as the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one. Those two multipliers are fixed and no other long-hire option is offered on the site, so a fortnight is priced as two weeks rather than a separate tier. For a family staying a week, the weekly figure is the one to compare against seven separate days — the arithmetic is done for you by the multiplier, and the manager will confirm the exact total for your chosen model when the booking is fixed. Longer stays across a month follow the same logic.

Before you collect the keys

  • Delivery address: any address in London, agreed with a manager along with the date and time before the booking is fixed.
  • Fuel: the car arrives clean with a full tank and must go back full; missing fuel and a refuelling service fee follow the rental agreement.
  • Documents: foreign licences are accepted for 12 months from your last entry into Great Britain, so check the date of entry before you book.
  • Charges on the road: the Congestion Charge and ULEZ are part of driving here; who pays them is agreed when booking, so raise it in the same conversation.
  • Outside the delivery area: delivery beyond the agreed places is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.

One practical note from our side: confirm the delivery time for the morning you actually need the car, not the day before — a booking fixed for 09:00 at Heathrow behaves very differently from one fixed for 09:00 in Mayfair, and the manager needs the real address to plan the hand-over.

Driving an SUV car rental in London on the road

Driving here is not like driving on the continent, and the first ten minutes behind the wheel teach you more than any guide. Traffic keeps to the left, every car in the Rent-Trip fleet is right-hand drive, and the rules below are the ones that catch visitors out.

Left-hand traffic and right-hand drive

Traffic drives on the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the gear lever sits under your left hand and the mirror angles take a day to get used to. Hold the left side of the road unless signs or markings say otherwise (Highway Code, rule 160), and keep close to the left kerb when turning (rule 183). At roundabouts you give way to traffic approaching from the right (rule 185) and travel clockwise. Speed limits are 30 mph in built-up areas in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, 60 mph on a single carriageway, 70 mph on a dual carriageway and 70 mph on a motorway; on lit roads the default is 30 mph unless signs say otherwise, and many zones here post 20 mph, so read the signs rather than the road. Holding a phone, satnav or tablet is banned even at a red light — £200 and 6 penalty points, and a driver who passed under 2 years ago loses the licence; hands-free is allowed if the device does not block your view. Seat belts are compulsory where fitted, and children need a child seat until they reach 135 cm or turn 12, whichever comes first — up to £500.

Congestion Charge and ULEZ

The Congestion Charge is £18 a day when paid on the day of travel or in advance, or £21 if paid by midnight on the third day after, and it runs 07:00–18:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00–18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. ULEZ is £12.50 a day for non-compliant vehicles, 24 hours a day, seven days a week except 25 December, and covers all 32 boroughs; petrol cars need Euro 4 or better and diesels Euro 6. Who pays road charges, tolls and penalty notices on a rental car is agreed when booking — we do not decide it for you. Check the plate on the TfL vehicle checker before you drive into the centre, because a car that fails the Euro standard owes the ULEZ charge on top of the Congestion Charge on the same day.

Tolls, fuel and the roads out of town

  • Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge), M25: £3.50 per crossing for cars, class B, or £2.80 with pre-payment, usually 06:00–22:00 every day, and payment is due by midnight the following day.
  • Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels: £4.20 at peak — northbound 06:00–10:00 and southbound 16:00–19:00 on weekdays — and £1.55 off-peak with Auto Pay.
  • Fuel: petrol is £1.75 a litre and diesel £1.99, so a hybrid pays for itself on the longer runs.
  • Airports: Heathrow sits 30.3 km away by road, about 45 minutes without traffic; Gatwick is 48.6 km and roughly 70 minutes.

On a motorway the left lane is the driving lane, the middle is for overtaking and the right is for overtaking again — sitting in the middle at 60 mph is the one habit that draws attention.

Documents and rules for SUV car rental in London

Driving an SUV here means holding a valid licence, knowing the speed and alcohol limits that apply, and keeping the phone out of your hand. The rules below are the ones that catch visitors out most often, and they apply to every car in our fleet.

Licence and paperwork

  • Foreign licence: you may drive on a full, valid foreign licence for 12 months from the date you last entered Great Britain — England, Wales and Scotland alike.
  • Age and IDP: the minimum age and any international driving permit requirement are agreed when booking.
  • Deposit, excess and delivery fees: set out in the rental agreement, never a figure quoted here.
  • Cards and payment: agreed when booking; we do not list accepted methods on the site.

We hand the car over clean and with a full tank, and it comes back the same way — full-to-full, with any missing fuel and a refuelling service fee settled as the agreement describes. No pre-paid tank or full-to-empty option exists on the site.

Speed, alcohol and phone rules

Speed limits are set by signs, and the signs win. In built-up areas the default is 30 mph (48 km/h) across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland; single carriageways run at 60 mph (96 km/h), dual carriageways at 70 mph (112 km/h), motorways at 70 mph. On lit roads 30 mph applies unless a sign says otherwise — and large parts of the capital are signed at 20 mph, so read every plate rather than assuming.

The alcohol limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood, 35 µg per 100 ml of breath and 107 mg per 100 ml of urine; Scotland is stricter at 50 / 22 / 67. Holding and using a phone, satnav or tablet is banned even while stationary at a light — £200 and 6 penalty points, and a driver who passed their test less than 2 years ago loses the licence outright. Hands-free is allowed as long as the device does not block your view.

On the road itself, keep left unless signs or markings say otherwise (Highway Code, rule 160), move closer to the left edge when turning (rule 183), and at roundabouts give way to traffic approaching from the right (rule 185), circulating clockwise.

Congestion Charge and ULEZ

To avoid the ULEZ charge, petrol cars need Euro 4 or better, diesels Euro 6. A PCN for either scheme is £180, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days. Who covers these charges and any penalty is agreed when booking — check your route before you set off.

Delivery points for SUV car rental in London

Rent-Trip brings the SUV to the address you give us, and the delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. That covers any address in the city and the six airports we serve, so the car can be waiting when you land or outside your hotel when you wake up. Nothing about the hand-over is decided by the website alone — the manager confirms the point, the day and the hour with you first.

Airports we deliver to

  • Heathrow Airport (LHR): 30.3 km by road from the centre, about 45 minutes without traffic, and 84,481,178 passengers a year.
  • Gatwick Airport (LGW): 48.6 km by road, roughly 70 minutes clear, 42,775,241 passengers a year.
  • Stansted Airport (STN): 57.9 km by road, around 63 minutes clear.
  • Luton Airport (LTN): 56.9 km by road, about 63 minutes clear, 17,770,247 passengers a year.
  • City Airport (LCY): 14.5 km by road, the closest of the six at roughly 33 minutes clear.
  • Southend Airport (SEN): 67.4 km by road, around 74 minutes clear, 719,513 passengers a year.

Places inside the delivery area

St Pancras & King’s Cross, Euston, Paddington, Victoria, Waterloo, Canary Wharf, Wembley, ExCeL London and Mayfair all sit inside the area we cover, so an SUV car rental can start from any of them. If your address falls outside these places, delivery is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site — ask the manager and you will get a straight answer rather than a booking that quietly falls through.

What to settle before the car arrives

  • Address: the exact point where you want the SUV, agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
  • Date and time: confirmed in the same conversation, so the car is not left waiting on a street you cannot stop on.
  • Fuel: the car arrives clean with a full tank and must go back full; anything missing, plus a refuelling service fee, is charged as set out in the rental agreement.
  • Charges and penalties: who pays road charges, tolls and penalty notices is agreed when booking, not assumed from the page.

In our experience the airport hand-overs go smoothest when the flight number is in the booking — a delayed landing is easier to plan around.
