Every driver of a premium car here needs three things at hand: a passport, a home driving licence and an International Driving Permit.

Which documents you need for premium car rental in Pattaya

• Home driving licence: the national licence from your own country, valid and unexpired for the whole hire period.
• International Driving Permit: the 1949 Geneva Convention document, recognised in Thailand under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.
• ASEAN nationals: a national licence from an ASEAN country is enough on its own, with no permit and no conversion.

Left-hand traffic and what changes at the wheel

The driving position is on the right. Nothing about the car is exotic — a Mercedes-Benz C 220 d behaves on Sukhumvit exactly as it does anywhere else — but your instincts are calibrated for the other side. Turning left becomes the easy move and turning right, across oncoming traffic, the one that needs a second look. Beach Road and Second Road, the two main streets through the centre, both run one-way anticlockwise, so a missed turn costs you a full loop rather than a U-turn. Set the mirror angle before you leave the delivery point, not at the first junction.

Speed limits, cameras and fines on Motorway 7

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h inside Pattaya City, which the law names a built-up area; a sign can lower the limit further.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h on ordinary roads between towns.
• Motorway 7: 120 km/h, enforced primarily by speed cameras.
• The fine: up to ฿1,000, and in practice ฿500 when paid on the receipt.
• Who receives it: a camera fine is issued to the registered owner — the rental company — and then re-invoiced to the renter.

Alcohol, seat belts and child seats

The blood-alcohol threshold is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, drivers on temporary licences, drivers without a licence or on the wrong category of licence, published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024. All passengers, including those in the back, must wear a seat belt. Children under six travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and below 135 cm a belt or a dedicated seat is required — the penalty reaches ฿2,000. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited.

Fuel on a premium car

Diesel B7 sits around ฿41.44 a litre, gasohol 95 around ฿39.94 and gasohol 91 around ฿39.57 at the Bangchak retail price we recorded on 24 September 2026; premium 98 runs to about ฿49.29 and premium diesel to ฿50.05. The Mercedes-Benz C 220 d takes diesel, the BMW X1 takes petrol, the E-Class petrol or diesel depending on the unit, and the C 350 e is a plug-in hybrid. Fill the tank before hand-back and keep the receipt — it settles any question about the level the car came with.

Motorway 7 and the runs beyond Chonburi

Motorway 7 is the road out of Pattaya: 8 lanes, a 120 km/h limit, and 125.865 km of it between Bangkok and Pattaya, continuing south to Map Ta Phut. Tolls for a car run by the table from ฿25 at Lat Krabang to ฿105 at Pong, and Thaiger puts the whole Bangkok–Pattaya trip at ฿105–130. Pay cash — Thaiger advises cash in a rental car — or use the M-PASS/Easy Pass lanes, which are usually the blue ones; M-Flow, the barrier-free camera system, runs mainly on Motorway 9, where M7 joins at Thap Chang Interchange for traffic from Don Mueang and western Bangkok. The free alternative is Hwy 34 Bang Na–Trat, then the Chonburi bypass onto Hwy 3 Sukhumvit through Bang Saen and Bang Phra.

Islands, and where the car stays behind

Koh Larn is 7.5 km offshore and reached by passenger ferry only, so the car stays in Pattaya at the Bali Hai pier end of Walking Street — the island is a foot day, not a driving day. Beach Road and Second Road both run one-way anticlockwise, and the pairing means a missed turn costs you a full loop rather than a U-turn.

What insurance comes with the car

• Third-party injury: the Por Ror Bor part is statutory, so it travels with the vehicle rather than with the driver.
• Your own risk: what you pay towards repairs after an incident is the excess, and its amount is written into the agreement, not quoted on this page.
