• Deposit, excess and delivery fees: agreed when booking and set out in the rental agreement.
• Tolls: AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera has been free since 01.09.2021, so the coastal corridor costs nothing.

What follows is what actually changes your driving day: the motorway tolls, the ZBE in Girona, and the coastal roads where a Nissan Juke or Qashqai earns its keep.

Tolls on the routes you will actually drive

The Generalitat's remaining tolls sit on the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at 8.42 € and Cubelles at 5.03 €, category 2) — none of them on the routes you take here. A vignette or pay-per-use return for Catalan motorways is under discussion, but no decision has been taken.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona

• Where it applies: from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell.
• Hours: 7–20, Monday to Friday, working days.
• Who is restricted: cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona.
• Relief: 24 days a year inside restricted hours without a permit.
• Enforcement: cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display.
• Foreign plates: a temporary permit is available if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements.
• Rental cars: the Spanish rental fleet carries the DGT badge, so a car with a sticker faces no restriction.

Speed limits and the roads themselves

On the autopista and autovía — AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33 — the limit is 120 km/h, and on the carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and the rest) it is 90 km/h. The coastal run from Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km and takes about 37 minutes; Roses is 75.2 km and roughly 63 minutes.

Road trips from Costa Brava with a Nissan rental

• Cap de Creus loop: the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to cars at set hours in season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September — check the calendar before you commit to the day.

Two practical points. First, the AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so the long motorway legs cost you nothing beyond fuel — budget your money for parking instead. Second, Girona's Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona operates 7–20 on weekdays, and a car from our fleet carries the DGT environmental badge, so the zone is not a problem for you; what is worth checking is where you leave the car once you are inside it.

Documents, fuel and the rental agreement

What you need at hand, what the car runs on and what is written in the contract — three things worth settling before the keys change hands. Spanish rules are specific enough that a two-minute read here saves an argument later.

Documents for driving in Spain

• EU/EEA licences: fully valid in Spain while they have not expired; nothing extra is required, and an IDP is not needed.
• Non-EU licences: valid for driving here, and the DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip and carrying it with your passport and national licence. Six months after you take up residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid for driving.
• Licences not in Spanish: accepted either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if they were issued on the Appendix 9 Geneva or Appendix 6 Vienna model; the international permit works as an alternative to the translation.

Insurance, the deposit, the excess, delivery fees and any discount are not fixed figures on this page — they are set out in the rental agreement, and the size of the deposit is confirmed before you sign. By Spanish consumer rules the advertised price must include every compulsory charge you cannot legally drive without, obligatory third-party cover among them. The same rules require that every scratch and dent is written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you drive off, that both sides sign it, and that you keep a copy — otherwise the damage is put on you.
