An open roof changes how you read this coast: the road itself becomes the destination. Below are the routes where a convertible earns its keep, the rules you drive under, and the small decisions that separate a good day from a wasted one.

The roads where the roof stays down

• The AP-7 corridor: 41.8 km of the same 89.4 km drive to Cadaqués — motorway, roof up, 120 km/h, purely functional.

Speed limits and what the coast road actually allows

Autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33 — run at 120 km/h. Carretera convencional, which is most of what you will actually enjoy here, is 90 km/h: the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260 all fall under it. Our advice: leave the roof down, accept the slower pace and treat the motorway as the boring connector it is. The reward is Cap de Creus, where the road to the Far de Cap de Creus is access-controlled — in March it runs 9:30–19:00 on set days, and from June the closures tighten further, so check the day before you go.

Wind, sun and the practicalities of an open car

Two things matter more here than anywhere flat: sunscreen on the neck and forearms, because the sun hits from above and the side for hours, and a scarf or cap you can stow when the wind picks up. Fuel is straightforward — petrol 95 E5 averages around €1.94 a litre across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations, so the Fiat 500C hybrid and the petrol models alike are easy to feed. Parking is where the coast bites: Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces and charges roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window, while Girona's zona blava runs at €1.20 an hour with a two-hour maximum. A convertible parked roof-down in a coastal car park is an open invitation — put the roof up whenever you leave the car, even for ten minutes.

Fuel: petrol 95, and what it costs on this coast

Gasolina 98 E5 averages €2.106 province-wide from 152 stations, and diesel (Gasóleo A) €1.922 from 266. We hand every car over with a full tank and ask for it back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno in Spanish — and any missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee is charged as set out in the rental agreement. Fill up before you return the car.

Parking: zona blava, zona verda and the resort car parks

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at €1.20 an hour with a two-hour maximum, so €2.40 for the full stay; the Sant Narcís area keeps different hours.
• Girona, zona verda: non-residents pay the same €1.20 an hour for up to two hours, with Pedreres–Vista Alegre running Monday–Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday mornings, and Güell–Devesa Monday–Saturday 8:00–20:00.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries: 200 park-and-ride spaces, free when you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, from 15 June to 15 September.
• Lloret de Mar, zona blava: zone A covers Tarradellas and Francesc Macià all year with seasonal hours; zone C covers Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella and Can Lloranes from 23 June to 11 September.

The ZBE in Girona and the Cap de Creus access window

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and the Barri Vell, and restricting cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona on working days, Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00. Cameras read plates rather than stickers, so you do not display anything, and there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, which means a car hired from us faces no restriction there. Further north, the road to the Far de Cap de Creus lighthouse closes to traffic through the season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September — so check the calendar for the day you plan to drive out to the headland.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement

Under Spanish law every car on the road carries Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, and that cover is included in any hire by default — it protects third parties, not the driver or the car itself. The legal limits are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025. So the mandatory layer is never something you buy from us; it is already there the moment you take the keys.

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) removes your liability for damage to the car in a collision, except for the excess. THW (Theft Protection) does the same for full or partial theft and vandalism, again minus the excess. The excess itself is printed in the agreement regardless of which of these you choose.

• Permiso de conducir: EU and EEA licences are valid in Spain until they expire, with no IDP required; DGT recommends a Permiso Internacional de Conducción for licences from outside the EU/EEA, carried together with your passport and national licence.
• Passport or ID: the original document in the main driver's name — a rental-company requirement rather than a DGT rule.
• Damage inspection: Spanish consumer rules require every scratch and dent to be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away, signed by both sides, with a copy kept by the renter.
