Licence, passport and bank card
- International Driving Permit: visitors from outside ASEAN need an IDP issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried alongside the home licence, as required by section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.
- ASEAN nationals: citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence, with no IDP and no conversion.
- Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
The police fine for driving without a permit runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident — so carry both documents even on a short run to dinner.
Minimum age and driving on the left

Exotic car rental in Thailand and driving rules, insurance and fines
Thai traffic keeps to the left, and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive. Speed limits are set by law: 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on expressways. Camera fines arrive at the owner and are re-invoiced to the renter, so the charge follows the booking rather than the driver.
Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. It does not cover damage to the exotic car itself. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. On a Lamborghini Huracán or a Ferrari 488 a kerbed alloy is not a cheap repair, so read that clause first.
- Home licence plus IDP: a foreign visitor needs both, under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.
- ASEAN nationals: drive on their national licence without an International Driving Permit.
- No IDP: the police fine is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
- Refusing a breath test: treated as an admission of drink-driving.
- Child seats and seat belts: children under 6 travel in a TISI-standard child seat, and every passenger wears a belt — these are rules of Thai law.
Camera fines arrive at the owner and are re-invoiced to the renter, so the charge follows the booking rather than the driver. Keep the agreement in the glovebox and take a photo of the tax sticker on the windscreen — the year on it is written in the Buddhist calendar, which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian one, and a rental car must carry a current one.
