The 911 Carrera Cabriolet is the entry point at €500 per day with 385 hp from 3.0 L, and the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet steps up to 480 hp at €700 per day. Both are rear-wheel drive with 4 seats, petrol, automatic, and the same 3.0 L displacement — the S buys you 95 hp more and nothing else in the spec sheet. The S is worth the extra €200 a day only if you actually use the power on the motorway rather than the coast road.

Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63, Ferrari Portofino and Lamborghini Urus

The AMG G 63 is €650 per day with 585 hp and all-wheel drive, the Ferrari Portofino €750 with 600 hp, and the Lamborghini Urus tops the page at €1,100 with 650 hp. The Urus and the G 63 both run 4.0 L and put power through all four wheels with 5 seats; the Portofino is the only 3.9 L unit here and the only Ferrari. If your week includes both a beach run and a dinner in Girona, the Urus covers both without a second booking.

What you need to hold to drive in Spain

• EU/EEA licence: fully valid in Spain until it expires, with nothing extra required — an International Driving Permit is not needed.
• Non-EU licence: valid for driving as a tourist, and the DGT recommends getting an International Driving Permit before the trip and carrying it with your passport and national licence.
• Licence not in Spanish: valid only with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if it was issued to the Appendix 9 of the Geneva Convention or Appendix 6 of the Vienna Convention model.
• International Driving Permit: a supporting document only — it is shown together with your passport and national licence, never on its own, and it runs for 1 year.
• Six-month rule: six months after you take up ordinary residence in Spain, a non-EU licence stops being valid and has to be exchanged.
• Passport or ID: the original in the main driver's name — a rental company requirement rather than a DGT rule.

The insurance that comes with any hire in Spain by law is the Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil — it covers injury and damage to third parties, up to €70,000,000 per case for personal injury and €15,000,000 for property, but not the car itself and not the driver.

Tolls on the routes you will drive

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor from the Catalan capital up to the border, free of charge since 01.09.2021.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the run from the Catalan capital towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar; barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: free of charge since 01.09.2021.
• What is still paid: on Generalitat roads only C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at €8.42 and Cubelles at €5.03, category 2). None of these sit on a Costa Brava route.

A vignette or a pay-per-use scheme for Catalan expressways is under discussion, but no decision has been taken.

The Girona low-emission zone and what it means for a rental

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025 and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days, and restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona. Cameras read number plates — you do not display the sticker. Twenty-four days a year are allowed inside the zone during restricted hours without a permit, and foreign plates can get a temporary authorisation if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car from us has no restriction here at all.

Roads where the car choice shows

The run from Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Cadaqués is 89.4 km and 80 minutes, of which 41.8 km is AP-7, 16.7 km GI-614, 14.6 km C-260 and 5.7 km N-II. Beyond Cadaqués, the road to Cap de Creus is closed on set days through the season — 28–31 March and individual days in April and May, 9:30–19:00; in June on set dates and daily from July to 13 September, 9:30–21:30. Book a convertible for the coast and an SUV for the inland run to Figueres, and check the Cap de Creus closure days before you set the date.

Parking in Costa Brava towns

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at 1.20 EUR/hour with a two-hour maximum (2.40 EUR); the hours differ around Sant Narcís.
• Girona, zona verda: non-residents pay the same 1.20 EUR/hour for a two-hour maximum; hours run Monday to Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 and Saturday 9:30–13:00 around Pedreres–Vista Alegre, and Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00 around Güell–Devesa.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces, roughly 15 EUR/day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride: 200 spaces, free if you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, from 15 June to 15 September.
• Lloret de Mar, zona blava: zone A (Tarradellas and Francesc Macià) runs all year on seasonal hours; zone C (Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella, Can Lloranes) only from 23 June to 11 September.
