Nothing is locked in until a manager has spoken to you. The form you send starts a conversation, and the hand-over point, the day and the hour are settled inside it.

Agreeing the booking with a manager

A form on its own does not reserve a car — a manager talks the details through with you first, because where the vehicle goes and when it is needed decide how the hand-over is planned. If you land at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK), pass on the flight number, and say whether you want the keys at the terminal or at your hotel. Hire runs from 1 day. Any delivery charge is settled while you book — ask before the reservation is locked, not after.

Where we bring the car

The car is handed over at any address in the city, at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and at Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Hotels, apartments and offices are all covered, along with both airports. A hand-over point beyond the city limits is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site — raise it with the manager and we will tell you whether it can be done.

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. The paperwork comes down to three things: a passport, a driving licence and, for most visitors, an International Driving Permit. Thai traffic keeps to the left and every car we hand over is right-hand drive, so the licence you hold at home is the starting point, not the whole answer.

What to bring to the hand-over

• International Driving Permit: the 1949 Geneva Convention permit, required alongside your national licence under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.

The International Driving Permit, and what happens without one

Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000. The larger risk sits with insurance: an insurer may refuse a claim if the driver was not properly licensed at the time of the incident.

Minimum age and premium classes

The minimum driver age is 21. Conditions for drivers under 25, and the extra requirements that apply to premium classes, are set out in the rental agreement — ask about them before the booking is fixed rather than at the hand-over, because the answer sometimes changes which car you should book.

Insurance and the rental agreement in Bangkok

Two insurance layers sit behind a Bangkok car hire, and the rental agreement is where both are spelled out. Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. First-class insurance, Class 1, covers damage to the car itself.

What Por Ror Bor and Class 1 cover

Por Ror Bor is compulsory motor insurance attached to every registered vehicle in Thailand, and it covers injury to third parties. Class 1 insurance goes further and covers damage to the car itself. The terms of Class 1 are set out in the rental agreement. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the same document. Read the Thai document, and ask the manager about any clause you cannot read, before you drive off.

Documents and licence behind the agreement

• Passport: your passport is part of the document set for a booking in Bangkok, alongside the driving licence.
• Home driving licence: a foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Driving a Bangkok rental car with traffic, tolls and fines

Thailand drives on the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so the first few kilometres take concentration rather than speed. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways, 110 km/h on the expressways and 100 km/h on elevated sections. A camera fine is issued to the car owner — us — then re-invoiced to the renter. Alcohol limits are strict: 20 mg/dl applies to drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences and drivers without a valid licence for the class of car. Treat any drink before driving as a risk.

Two toll systems matter on a car hired here, and they are paid differently.

• EXAT expressways (Chaloem Maha Nakhon, Si Rat): cash or an Easy Pass or M-PASS tag; a short passenger-car trip runs roughly ฿50–100.
• Motorway 7 to Pattaya: about ฿105 for a car from the Lat Krabang entry to Pattaya, with ฿25 to Bang Bo and ฿100 to Pong.
• Motorway 9 (Kanchanaphisek outer ring): M-Flow, barrier-free — a camera reads the plate and the bill follows; roughly ฿30–70 for a car.
• Don Muang Tollway: 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, roughly ฿60–115 for a car.

Ask at hand-over whether a tag is fitted and how M-Flow is handled; the exact terms are set out in the rental agreement. Parking is the other small cost to plan: CentralWorld gives two hours free then charges ฿20 an hour, rising to ฿50 after six hours, while ICONSIAM gives two hours free and charges ฿30 for the third hour. Motorway 7 runs from the Lat Krabang entry towards Pattaya, and the fares are small: it is 25 ฿ to Bang Bo, 100 ฿ to Pong and 105 ฿ all the way to Pattaya. Motorway 9, the outer Kanchanaphisek ring, runs on M-Flow — no barrier, the camera reads the plate and the bill arrives afterwards; without registration you have two days to pay by plate number through the M-Flow site, app, QR code, bank or ATM, and from the third day the tariff doubles before it climbs further. Our advice is simple: ask at hand-over whether a tag is fitted to your car and how the M-Flow account is handled. In town, mall parking is the easy answer — CentralWorld gives two hours free, then 20 ฿ an hour and 50 ฿ an hour after six; ICONSIAM gives two hours free, 30 ฿ for the third hour and 60 ฿ an hour past seven.

Longer bookings are where the arithmetic matters most. Weekly rates are calculated as the daily rate multiplied by six, and monthly rates as the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one. Those are the only multipliers we use, and they apply across the whole fleet, from the ฿700 Economy cars to the ฿35,000 Exotic class.
