Fines, alcohol and the phone

Speeding penalties follow a DGT table that runs from 100 EUR with no points to 600 EUR with 6 points, and exceeding the limit by more than 60 km/h in town or 80 km/h outside it becomes a criminal offence rather than an administrative one. The general alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals; above 0.60 mg/l it is a crime. Holding a phone while driving costs 200 EUR and 6 points, while a seatbelt, helmet or child-seat offence is 200 EUR and 4 points. Child restraints are compulsory for anyone under 135 cm, and above that height a standard belt is allowed. Fines are graded leve up to 100 EUR without points, grave at 200 EUR and muy grave at 500 EUR with points always attached, and paying within 20 calendar days halves the amount.

Parking, tolls and the low-emission zone

Parking in a zona blava or zona verda is metered, and a fine for unpaid parking or an unpaid toll can land on the vehicle owner or the renter, while moving offences, alcohol and drugs fall on whoever was driving. The AP-7 corridor from Vila-seca to La Jonquera has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, as have the C-32 Maresme section and the C-33, though the C-16 and the southern C-32 around Castelldefels and Sitges still charge. The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has operated since 15.09.2025, restricting cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona between 07:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday on working days, with 24 days a year allowed inside the restricted hours without a permit; cameras read plates, so no sticker needs to be displayed. The roads and the one window to plan around

The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme and C-33 lost their barriers the same night. What is left paid in Catalonia is the C-16 towards the Cadí and Vallvidrera, plus the C-32 south of Barcelona at the Vallcarca and Cubelles barriers — none of it on a Costa Brava route. That matters for budgeting: a loop through Palafrugell, Begur and L'Escala costs fuel, not tolls.

The exception to plan around is the Cadaqués — Far de Cap de Creus road, which runs under an access restriction. The road is closed to cars 9:30–19:00 on 28–31 March and selected days in April and May, 9:30–21:30 on set June days and daily from July to 13 September.

Fuel is the other line item. Petrol 95 E5 averages €1.94/l across the province of Girona against a median of €1.979, with 250 filling stations in the province and 58 along the coast; diesel averages €1.922/l. Fill up inland before you drop back to the coast — the spread between the cheapest and dearest pumps in the province is wide enough to notice over a week.

Two things are worth settling before you arrive. First, the documents — carry the licence you hold, and remember that a licence not in Spanish is accepted either with an official translation or if it was issued under the Geneva or Vienna convention model; the DGT advises an international driving permit for non-EU licences. Second, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025, which restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge in Girona on working days between 7 and 20.
