What a foreign driver must carry

Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident — a detail worth checking before you leave home rather than on Sukhumvit. Rules of the road for a premium car in Bangkok

Thailand drives on the left and every car we hand over is right-hand drive, so the lane discipline you use at home may feel mirrored for the first hour. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways, 110 km/h on the expressways and 100 km/h on elevated sections. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed inside it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, which is why the agreement matters more than the hand-over conversation. The two layers of cover

Por Ror Bor is the compulsory layer, and it pays for injury to third parties rather than for the metal. It will not repair the BMW X3 if you clip a pillar in a car park. We hand the car over with both layers in place, and the paperwork you receive names what each one does. Read the excess line before you drive off.

Driving a premium rental car in Bangkok

Traffic keeps to the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive — the first thing to adjust to after a left-hand-drive home market.

Speed limits are set per road type:

• In built-up areas: 80 km/h, which covers most of the city grid and the roads around Siam and Pathum Wan.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h.
• Motorways (M7, M9): 120 km/h.
• Expressways: 110 km/h.
• Elevated sections: 100 km/h.

The Low Emission Zone does not touch a car hired from us. It applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels — trucks and buses — on days when PM2.5 passes 75.1 µg/m³ in at least five districts. A BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz S-Class sits outside that rule entirely.

The EXAT expressways — Chaloem Maha Nakhon, Si Rat and the rest — take cash or an Easy Pass tag, and M-PASS works on the same lanes, though one car carries one tag. Motorway 7 toward Pattaya has nine payment points: from the Lat Krabang entrance it is ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya. Motorway 9 uses M-Flow, where a camera reads the plate and the bill follows — unregistered drivers pay within two days, after which the rate doubles and then escalates.

CentralWorld gives two hours free, then ฿20 an hour, rising to ฿50 after six. ICONSIAM gives two hours free, ฿30 for the third hour, ฿60 an hour after seven. Terminal 21 Asok gives three hours free. Central Bangna gives six.
