Why an electric automatic costs more than an Economy car

Electric is the largest class on this page with 32 cars from ฿1,050, against 15 Economy cars from ฿700. The gap is ฿350 a day, and it buys a different car rather than a better one: a BYD Dolphin at ฿1,050 with 95 hp, a Nissan Leaf at ฿1,250 with 150 hp, a GWM ORA Good Cat at ฿1,250 with 171 hp, or a BYD Seal at ฿1,250 with 313 hp and rear-wheel drive. Ask where you plan to charge overnight before choosing electric.

What moves the price inside one class

• Seats: a 7-seat Toyota Veloz at ฿1,300 a day sits ฿600 above the cheapest 5-seat Economy car at ฿700.
• Fuel type: a petrol Honda Jazz and an electric Nissan Leaf both cost ฿1,250 — fuel type does not set the price on its own.
• Body and power: a Mazda CX-30 crossover at ฿1,100 with 165 hp costs ฿100 more a day than the 114 hp MG 3 hatchback at ฿1,000.

Longer bookings are where the arithmetic changes. Weekly rates run at daily x 6, monthly at daily x 21, so the per-day figure drops the moment you stop counting single days.

Driving an automatic car in Bangkok after rental

Speed limits you can actually be fined for

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h inside the city's built-up limits, 90 km/h once you are outside them.
• Motorways: 120 km/h on Motorway 7 and Motorway 9, the outer ring road.
• Expressways: 110 km/h on the city expressways, 100 km/h on elevated sections.
• Signs override: a posted sign can lower any of these figures.

Alcohol, children and the paperwork behind the wheel

The alcohol limit is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, for holders of temporary licences, for drivers without a licence or with one of the wrong category — the ministerial regulation was published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024. Children under 6 must travel in a child seat built to the TISI standard, and anyone under 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat; the fine reaches ฿2,000. Seat belts are for every passenger, including the back row. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited.

Documents and the IDP

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, alongside section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act; the police fine for driving without one is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. Traffic-camera fines reach the owner of the car and are re-invoiced to the renter.

Why the permit matters more than the fine

Driving without an International Driving Permit is not just a paperwork slip. Thailand drives on the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the first hour behind the wheel is already unfamiliar; adding an invalid document to that is a needless risk. If your permit is still at home, get it before you fly rather than hunting for one after arrival.

Age and licence conditions

Insurance and the rental agreement

Every car we rent in Bangkok carries compulsory motor insurance, known as Por Ror Bor, and first-class cover for the vehicle itself. The terms of that cover and the excess are set out in the rental agreement, which since 30 December 2025 is a contract controlled by the OCPB and written in Thai.

• Por Ror Bor: compulsory motor insurance attached to every registered car — it covers injury to third parties, not the car.
