Island stations sell E20, 91 and 95 for the petrol models. Fill-up habits matter more here than the grade: most island fuel stations take cash only, so keep small notes in the car before a long loop. - Security hold: a bank card in the main driver's name is used for it; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
- Insurance: compulsory Por Ror Bor comes with every registered car; Class 1 cover and its excess are set out in the rental agreement.
- Delivery: the address, date and time are agreed with a manager when booking, and any delivery fee is agreed at the same moment.
The weekly rate is the daily rate multiplied by six, and the monthly rate is the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one — that is the whole mechanic behind the numbers in the table above, and it is why a longer booking lowers the cost of each day. On a Wrangler, a month works out at ฿84,000, which is what the daily figure of ฿4,000 gives over twenty-one days; on the MU-X the same month comes to ฿35,700. We do not apply a different multiplier for high season or for a public holiday. If your plans are still loose, the sensible move is to price the trip at both lengths before you commit: the gap between a week and a month on the same model is large enough to change which car makes sense.

What the driver needs to bring
- Home driving licence: a full national licence, valid for the whole hire.

- ASEAN nationals: drivers from ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence, with no International Driving Permit required.
Age, licence and insurance conditions
Rent-Trip releases the car to drivers aged 21 and over; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement. A foreign visitor drives on a home licence plus an International Driving Permit — section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act — and the police fine for driving without one runs ฿500–1,000, while an insurer may refuse a claim. Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car. First-class insurance covers damage to the car itself; its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the first kilometre out of the delivery address is the one to take slowly. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it — worth asking the manager for the key lines in English before you sign.

Samui International Airport sits in Bo Phut, about 2 km north of Chaweng, and it handles 50 flights a day with approval to raise that to 73. Driving Rules and Fines That Apply to SUV & 4x4 Hire
Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left, and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive. Speed limits, alcohol limits and the fines that follow a camera flash are the same rules for a seven-seat Fortuner as for a small hatchback — the difference is only in how much damage a heavy SUV does when a rule is broken.
Speed limits and what they mean on the island
Built-up areas on Koh Samui are capped at 80 km/h, roads outside them at 90 km/h, and there is no motorway or four-lane divided highway here, so the 120 km/h and 110 km/h limits that apply elsewhere in Thailand never come into play.
Alcohol, seat belts and child seats
The blood-alcohol limit is 50 mg% for ordinary drivers and 20 mg% for drivers under 20 or those holding a temporary licence; refusing a breath test is treated as an admission. The penalty reaches up to one year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months. Children under six must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and anyone below 135 cm needs a belt or a dedicated seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000 under the 13th amendment to the Land Traffic Act 1979, in force since 17 August 2023.
Documents, cameras and parking
- Home licence plus IDP: a foreign visitor drives on a home driving licence together with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; the fine for driving without one is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
- ASEAN licences: citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without an International Driving Permit.
- Camera fines: traffic-camera penalties are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so they can reach you after you have left the island.
- Parking by the kerb: stopping at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited.
- Tax sticker: the square blue hologram sticker on the windscreen carries the year in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian plus 543) and must be current on a hired car.

Koh Phangan is served from Lipa Noi by Raja Ferry Port, roughly 1 h 30 min, and Surat Thani sits on the mainland via Don Sak. The catch is that most island companies do not allow a car beyond Samui, and the ones that do require the arrangement to be confirmed when booking. Ang Thong Marine Park is a boat day, not a driving day, so the car simply waits at the pier.
Wet-season trips and the smarter timing
Rainfall climbs sharply from October: 294.9 mm across 15.8 rain days that month, 444.6 mm and 16.5 days in November, then 263.1 mm in December. The dry stretch from February to April is the opposite — 64.3 mm in February across 4.3 rain days — and high season runs 20 December to 31 March. In the wet months, start the loop earlier in the day.
