What to have ready at hand-over

• Driving licence: EU and EEA licences are valid in Spain while they remain in force; for licences from outside the EEA, the DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip and carrying it with your passport and national licence.
• Fuel: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank — lleno-lleno.
• The car's condition: the mandatory insurance, the deposit, the excess, delivery fees and any discounts are set out in the rental agreement, so read those lines before you sign.

One practical note on the last leg: if your address sits on a hillside lane above Begur or L'Escala, say so when you agree the delivery point. A van and a hatchback reach those streets very differently, and it is easier to match the car to the road before the booking is fixed than after.

Tolls on the routes you will actually drive

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor down to the border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so the main north-south run costs nothing.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the approach towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar went free when the barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): the only Generalitat tolls left, and neither sits on a coastal route.

The Girona low-emission zone

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has operated since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit. Cameras read plates, so there is no sticker to display, and foreign plates can get a temporary permit if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, which means a hired car simply is not affected — worth knowing before you plan a morning in Girona.

Parking, fuel and the roads themselves

Zona blava and zona verda in Girona are the two paid parking rings, at 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum; Sant Narcís runs on its own schedule. In Lloret de Mar the Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September and is free the rest of the time, while the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride holds 200 cars and is free for stays over 12 hours. Speeds are 120 km/h on the autopista and autovía and 90 km/h on carreteras convencionales such as the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260.

Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 €/l across the province of Girona and 1.956 €/l on the coast, with 250 filling stations in the province and 58 along the coast itself. Two practical notes before you plan a route. The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme barriers came down the same night, so the inland motorway legs cost nothing. And if your day trip takes you into Girona itself, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona applies from 15.09.2025, Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00 on working days, to cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in the city. Spanish fleets carry the DGT badge, so the zone is not a problem for the cars we supply — but a private car without one is.

For the Cap de Creus run specifically, the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to cars at set hours through the season — in August daily from 9:30 to 21:30 — so drive it before 9:30 or take the Moventis shuttle from the Corral d'en Morell car park.
