The AP-7 (Autopista del Mediterráneo) on the Salou (Tarragona) — Alicante stretch has been toll-free since 01.01.2020, when the Aumar concession ended and 373.8 km were released. That matters for a day out: Dénia, Calp, Benidorm and Peñíscola are all reachable from the city without a péage, so the only running cost is fuel. Longer runs: what to check before you set off

• Fuel policy: the car comes clean with a full tank and must go back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno in Spain. Anything else is charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Meters operate Monday to Saturday, 09:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00. Zona naranja, the mixed resident-and-rotation zone, is the expensive one for visitors: €2.10 for an hour and €3.30 for two, charged in Ciutat Vella Monday to Friday 9:00–20:00 and in Ruzafa, El Botànic and La Roqueta 9:00–19:00.

Speed limits and cameras you will meet

Motorways are capped at 120 km/h, ordinary out-of-town roads at 90 km/h, and city streets at 30 km/h on a single lane each way or 50 km/h where there are two or more lanes in one direction. The V-21 access road and the V-30 urban ring road carry fixed speed cameras. Alcohol limits sit at 0.25 mg/l of breath for experienced drivers and 0.15 mg/l for anyone in their first two years.
