The 51 km ring road circles the island and links all the main resorts — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam — which makes the whole of Koh Samui reachable on a single loop.

The ring road and what it is really like

Island hazards are specific rather than dramatic: potholes that are sometimes deep, standing water after rain, oil patches left by refuse trucks and animals wandering onto the tarmac. Because the loop is 51 km, no resort on the island is far from another, and a wrong turn costs minutes rather than an afternoon. The first hour behind the wheel is the one that matters — pull out of the hotel car park, drive a kilometre in each direction before you commit to a longer run.

• Payment: cash is the norm at island stations and only a minority accept cards, so keep notes on you.

Rules worth knowing before you set off

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, and the police fine for driving without one is ฿500–1,000. Children under six must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and every passenger wears a seat belt, including those in the back. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is not allowed. The alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood (20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences), built-up areas are limited to 80 km/h, and camera fines are re-invoiced to the renter — read the agreement before you drive away, not after.

Driving without the correct permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident.

Age, insurance and what the agreement covers

The minimum driver age is 21. Conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement — ask when booking and we will confirm what applies to the car you have chosen.

Every registered car in Thailand carries compulsory motor insurance, known as Por Ror Bor, which covers injury to third parties. The security hold is taken on a bank card in the main driver's name, again with the amount stated in the agreement.

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so an unpaid camera ticket follows the booking rather than the driver.

Step 1 — tell us where and when

• Delivery address: the hotel, the villa or the airport terminal where you want the car handed over, written in full.
• Date and time: the day the car comes to you and the hour you expect it, agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
• Flight or ferry number: useful when the address is Samui International Airport (USM) or a pier, so the timing survives a delay.
• Trip length: one day, a week or a month — the rate changes with the length, and daily, weekly and monthly are three different prices.

Step 2 — the manager confirms the car and the terms

A manager matches your dates to one of the 57 cars on this page and confirms the class, the rate and the delivery address. A delivery fee, if any, is agreed when booking. The deposit, the insurance excess and the young-driver conditions are set out in the rental agreement, not on this page — ask about them in the same conversation, before you commit. Documents are the same for every booking: passport, home driving licence, an International Driving Permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name for the security hold.

Step 3 — pick-up day on the island

Weekly and monthly rates are lower per day than the daily rate — weekly is daily x 6, monthly is daily x 21 — so a two-week booking costs less per day than the same fourteen days booked one at a time. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, which is worth remembering on the first kilometre away from the hand-over point.
